Counterpoint Research: iPhone's share of the US smartphone market reached 42% in Q3 2021

Counterpoint Research published its analysis of the third quarter smartphone market in Europe earlier today, and now has corresponding data for the U.S. While the Old Continent has a more diverse selection of manufacturers, the American public is primarily using Apple or Samsung phones, and both companies are increasing their lead over their competitors.

It is worth noting that despite the continued global shortage of components, the total transaction volume of the US smartphone market still increased by 1% year-on-year.

Research director Jeff Fieldhack revealed that the US market continued its upward trend. Apple's sales increased by 9%, while Samsung recorded an 18% annual growth. Even with supply chain shortages, Apple's iPhone 13, launched in September, contributed 17% of all sales in the third quarter of 2021. This trend is expected to continue and Apple's performance is expected to remain strong.

Samsung's share gains were driven by the popularity of two new and improved foldable phones and the introduction of its most affordable 5G smartphone, the Galaxy A32 5G, to the U.S. It's sold both through carriers like T-Mobile and through prepaid plans from Metro (which is also owned by T-Mobile).

Smaller brands like BLU, HMD and Wiko continue to cater to the low end of the market, but the dominance of Apple and Samsung is unmatched, with eight out of every ten phones sold in the U.S. coming from one of these two companies, analysts said.
