Will there be any sequelae after infection with Omicron? When should I seek medical attention? Authoritative answers——

The "new ten" measures to further optimize prevention and control point out that infected people should be scientifically classified and treated, and asymptomatic infected people and mild cases who meet the conditions for home isolation are generally isolated at home. In what cases can home isolation be carried out? In what cases do you need to go to the hospital for medical treatment? According to the CCTV News client, Tong Zhaohui, a respiratory critical care expert and director of the Beijing Institute of Respiratory Diseases, gave the answer.

Will there be any sequelae after being infected with the Omicron variant?

Tong Zhaohui introduced that in medicine, sequelae are defined as the inability to recover or partial recovery of functions of certain organs and tissues after damage. For example, sequelae of cerebrovascular disease and hemiplegia in bed are difficult to recover, or partially recover. For example, poliomyelitis is also an infectious disease. After contracting it, it will leave sequelae of poliomyelitis, which is called sequelae. Symptoms that exist for a period of time after being infected with the new coronavirus, such as shortness of breath and coughing for a period of time after contracting the disease, but they can be recovered over time.

Tong Zhaohui said that there is currently no evidence that infection with Omicron will cause sequelae.

Tong Zhaohui said that the current research on post-COVID symptoms at home and abroad is aimed at the previous original strains, including Delta. After all, Omicron occurred in a relatively short period of time, and it should be said that there is no observation of Omicron's post-COVID symptoms in China. More than 90% of Omicron infections are asymptomatic and mild, and its symptoms are mainly manifested in the upper respiratory tract, such as low-to-moderate fever, cough, sore throat, and then it will be fine in 5 or 7 days. From common sense, there should be no sequelae, because it is in the upper respiratory tract and does not affect the organs and tissues in our body. At least there is no relevant literature at home and abroad to support this statement.

It is recommended that asymptomatic and mild (patients) without obvious underlying diseases be isolated at home

Tong Zhaohui introduced that currently the patients infected with Omicron are mainly mild and asymptomatic in clinical practice, that is, mild and asymptomatic account for more than 90%.

For this category of patients who mainly have upper respiratory tract symptoms, we recommend that asymptomatic and mild patients with no obvious underlying diseases should be isolated at home ; the second category of patients with underlying diseases, such as cerebrovascular and cardiovascular diseases, including older patients, we generally recommend that they go to the hospital for treatment ; the third category is patients with unstable underlying diseases, including those with some chronic diseases that require regular treatment, such as tumors and leukemia . There are also some positive patients who are about to give birth or who need emergency surgery . It is also recommended that they go to a general hospital .

How to isolate and treat at home if infected with the new coronavirus?

Tong Zhaohui introduced that they should be isolated from other people at home as much as possible, for example, those who are positive should be in the same room. The treatment is actually symptomatic treatment , such as reducing fever if there is a fever, and stopping cough if there is a cough. However, it is not recommended to use antipyretics for general low-grade fever , or if the cough is tolerable and does not affect life, sleep, or eating , such a mild cough does not actually require intervention or medication .

Tong Zhaohui introduced that the symptoms of Omicron infection usually disappear in about 5 days or at most 7 days, so there is no need to worry. In general, it is recommended to use antipyretics when the temperature is above 38.5℃. There is no need to stock up medicine for this. Just keep some medicine at home as usual. Most patients with mild and asymptomatic symptoms can recover without taking medicine.

Experts: Five situations require medical attention

At the press conference of the Joint Prevention and Control Mechanism of the State Council held on December 8, Wang Guiqiang, director of the Department of Infectious Diseases at Peking University First Hospital, said that patients need some basic conditions for home observation, including living in a separate room and not having serious underlying diseases. Most of the new coronavirus infected people can stay at home, and only a small number of people with serious underlying diseases need to go to medical institutions for treatment. He said that home observation emphasizes observation and treatment. On the one hand, you need to take your temperature regularly and observe your various symptoms. At the same time, if you have fever, cough and other symptoms, you can take symptomatic medication.

If any of the following five situations occur, Wang Guiqiang recommends contacting the community doctor. If the condition is serious, you can contact 120 to go to the hospital for diagnosis and treatment.

The first is difficulty breathing or shortness of breath.

The second situation is that after drug treatment, the fever persists, exceeds 38.5 degrees Celsius, and lasts for more than 3 days, then you should go to the hospital.

The third situation is that the original underlying disease is significantly aggravated. For example, high blood pressure cannot be controlled by medication, diabetes cannot be controlled by medication, or there is a risk of other critical illnesses. You must go to the hospital for treatment in time.

The fourth situation is that children show some drowsiness, refusal to eat, diarrhea, vomiting, etc., which do not improve after treatment and last for more than two days and need to be sent to the hospital for treatment.

Fifth, if pregnant women experience headaches, dizziness, palpitations, shortness of breath, or abnormal fetal movements, etc., they should also go to the hospital for further diagnosis and treatment.
