We Are Social: 2020 Global Network Overview Report

We Are Social and Hootsuite have released a new report, "Global Web Overview 2020". As the new decade begins, it is becoming increasingly clear that the web, mobile and social media have become an integral part of people's daily lives around the world. There are currently more than 4.5 billion people using the internet worldwide, and social media users have exceeded the 3.8 billion mark.

Nearly 60% of the world’s population is already online, and by the middle of this year, more than half of the world’s total population will use social media.

However, some important challenges remain, with approximately 40% of the world’s population still “unconnected”. The latest data shows that women are more likely to be “unconnected” than men. The gender gap is particularly pronounced in South Asia, where men are three times more likely to use social media than women.

In the past 12 months, nearly 300 million people came online for the first time, with the majority of new users living in developing economies.

The Internet is also playing an increasingly important role in our lives. Global Internet users spend an average of 6 hours and 43 minutes online every day, and typical users now spend more than 40% of their waking time using the Internet. In 2020, humans will spend a total of 1.25 billion years using the Internet.

This year, mobile devices will account for more than half of our time online, but most Internet users still use a combination of mobile and computer to access the internet.

When it comes to mobile activity, apps now account for more than 90% of time spent on mobile devices. The data also shows that we use apps for more and more daily activities, but social media still accounts for half of mobile device usage time.

Internet users around the world spend an average of 2 hours and 24 minutes using social media on all devices every day, accounting for more than one-third of their Internet access time.
