China Academy of Information and Communications Technology: Analysis Report on Domestic Mobile Phone Market Operation in August 2020

1. Overall situation of domestic mobile phone market

In August 2020, the total shipments of the domestic mobile phone market were 26.907 million units, a year-on-year decrease of 12.9%; from January to August, the total shipments of the domestic mobile phone market were 202 million units, a year-on-year decrease of 19.5%.

In August 2020, 45 new mobile phone models were launched in China, the same as the same period last year. From January to August, a total of 301 new models were launched, a year-on-year decrease of 12.2%.

2. Development of 5G mobile phones

In August 2020, the domestic market shipped 16.17 million 5G mobile phones, accounting for 60.1% of the total mobile phone shipments in the same period; 22 new models were launched, accounting for 48.9% of the number of new mobile phone models launched in the same period. From January to August, the domestic market shipped 93.679 million 5G mobile phones and launched 141 new models, accounting for 46.3% and 46.8% respectively.

3. Composition of domestic and foreign brands in the domestic mobile phone market

In August 2020, the shipment volume of domestic brand mobile phones was 24.432 million units, a year-on-year decrease of 15.6%, accounting for 90.8% of the mobile phone shipments in the same period; 42 new models were launched, a year-on-year increase of 5.0%, accounting for 93.3% of the number of new mobile phone models launched in the same period. From January to August, the cumulative shipment volume of domestic brand mobile phones was 184 million units, a year-on-year decrease of 21.0%, accounting for 91.2% of the mobile phone shipments in the same period; the cumulative number of new models launched was 276, a year-on-year decrease of 9.2%, accounting for 91.7% of the number of new mobile phone models launched in the same period.

IV. Development of domestic smartphones

In August 2020, smartphone shipments reached 25.624 million units, down 13.4% year-on-year, accounting for 95.2% of mobile phone shipments in the same period. From January to August, cumulative smartphone shipments reached 196 million units, down 18.5% year-on-year, accounting for 96.8% of mobile phone shipments in the same period.

In August 2020, 35 new smartphone models were launched, a year-on-year decrease of 2.8%, accounting for 77.8% of the number of new smartphone models launched in the same period. From January to August, a total of 232 new smartphone models were launched, a year-on-year decrease of 12.1%, accounting for 77.1% of the number of new models launched in the same period.
