Canalys: India's smartphone market shipments reached 33.5 million units in the first quarter of 2020, up 12% year-on-year

A report recently released by Canalys shows that shipments in India's smartphone market grew 12% to 33.5 million units in the first quarter of 2020.

From the manufacturer ranking, Xiaomi ranked first with a market share of 30.6% and a shipment volume of 10.3 million units; vivo's shipment volume soared by nearly 50%, surpassing Samsung for the first time and ranking second, occupying nearly 20% of the market share, with a shipment volume of nearly 6.7 million units; Samsung ranked third with a shipment volume of 6.3 million units, and a year-on-year decrease of 14% in market share; Realme ranked fourth with a shipment volume of 3.9 million units, and OPPO ranked fifth with a shipment volume of 3.5 million units. It is worth noting that four of the top five manufacturers are Chinese companies, with a total market share of 72.6%.

Canalys pointed out that Xiaomi still occupies a leading position in the Indian market by leveraging its two core advantages: continued investment in local production and supply chain, and efficient online and offline channel marketing strategies.

In addition, Canalys analyst @Madhumita Chaudhary said: "The first quarter was mixed for vivo. The surge in shipments in the first quarter was mainly attributed to the inventory prepared before the massive Indian Premier League (IPL). However, the sudden lockdown at the end of March disrupted the manufacturer's plans. Due to the postponement of the IPL and the fact that most of its main shipping channels, offline retail, were locked, vivo will face difficulties in shipping at the retail level after the lockdown is lifted."

Canalys also predicts that smartphone shipments in India will drop sharply in the second quarter of 2020, mainly due to India's lockdown policy that will continue until May 3 and the supply and demand issues faced by manufacturers in the near future.

In addition, Chaudhary added that offline channels have been slow to recover due to people's concerns about the spread of the epidemic, and online channels will continue to be successful.
