59% of mobile video experiences have been significantly improved

Users in 22 countries had an excellent mobile video experience, including major markets such as Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom. Likewise, 21 countries entered the good category this year, including Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Russia and Vietnam. France was the only country to skip two levels, moving from fair to very good in just one year. Video experience improved in 59 countries.

Countries ranked high for mobile download speeds are far from leading in video experience

In OpenSignal's State of Mobile report, South Korea ranked first in mobile download speeds but ranked 21st in mobile video experience, and Canada ranked third in the world in mobile download speeds but only ranked 22nd in mobile video experience.

Real Growth in Mobile Video Consumption Requires Real Video Analytics

OpenSignal's unique mobile video experience measurement is derived from an ITU-based methodology for determining perceived video quality. Among other inputs, our methodology takes into account picture quality, video load time, and stall rate to create a score on a scale of 0-100 that reflects the mobile video quality perceived by users.

US lags in mobile video as carriers face spectrum crunch

While Americans’ video experience improved, with scores increasing from 46.7 to 53.8, it wasn’t enough to put the country in the best category.

Mobile video quality rated excellent in six countries

Of the 100 countries analyzed, only Norway, the Czech Republic, Austria, Denmark, Hungary and the Netherlands had mobile users enjoying a top mobile video experience. Overall, users in 37% of countries had a very good or excellent experience.

28% of countries ranked moderate in terms of mobile video experience

9% of countries have a poor mobile video experience, meaning mobile videos are barely watchable.
