Piper Jaffray collected opinions from thousands of teens, with an average age of 16.3, to understand their spending patterns, fashion trends, technology, and brand and media preferences.

Teens spent about $2,600 per year, up 1 percent year-over-year and 6 percent compared to last fall.

Food was the top choice for men, with Chick-fil-A being the most popular restaurant.

Footwear accounts for an increasing share of girls’ spending, while fashion accessories hit a new low.

Video games saw the most significant growth, accounting for 14% of male teen spending, compared with an average of 11% over the years.

Brand Preference

Sports brands dominate teenagers' preferences, with Nike and Vans being the two most popular footwear brands.

Streetwear brand Supreme is declining; Off-White and European luxury brands are becoming more popular; preppy styles are losing their edge, such as Polo, Sperry, and Vineyard Vines.

Tarte is the number one makeup brand, Neutrogena is the number one skincare brand, and 80% of teens get their beauty tips from influencers.

83% of teens own an iPhone, and 86% expect the iPhone to be their next phone.

The most popular social platform was Snapchat, but Instagram was considered the most used; Facebook had low engagement.
