Gartner: Global PC, tablet and smartphone shipments to grow 2.0% in 2018

According to the latest forecast released by Gartner, global shipments of PCs, tablets and smartphones will exceed 2.35 billion units in 2018, a year-on-year increase of 2.0%. This is the highest growth rate since 2015.

"The world has become mobile-oriented and people only rely on smartphones" is a misunderstanding. According to the latest Gartner survey, people rely almost equally on PCs, smartphones or tablets. 40% of respondents mainly use PCs or tablets to perform daily activities, while 34% believe that smartphones are more convenient.

The point is that people replace their smartphones far more frequently than they do their PCs.

In 2018, traditional PC shipments are expected to drop by 4.4%, while mobile phone shipments are expected to increase by 2.4%.

Driven by commercial PC sales, the global PC market will grow 0.8% in 2018. In 2017, corporate spending on PCs will grow 5%, and this figure will remain the same in 2018.

On the other hand, global smartphone sales will exceed 1.6 billion units in 2018. In 2018, mobile phone sales are expected to be around 190,000 units, with smartphones accounting for 86%, a year-on-year increase of 6%.

Gartner expects Apple's iPhone X to be the driving force for mobile phone growth in North America, China and Western Europe, despite its slightly higher price. On the other hand, component shortages may not be able to meet smartphone demand in the fourth quarter of 2017, which will further drive smartphone demand growth in 2018.
