Morning Consult: Only 17% of American adults are interested in iPhone 8/8 Plus

According to Morning Consult, U.S. adults are less interested in buying the latest iPhone generation — iPhone 8 or iPhone X — than they were last year’s iPhone 7.

In the September 14-17 survey, only 17% of respondents said they were likely or very likely to buy the new iPhone 8 or 8 Plus, and 76% said they were unlikely to buy the new iPhone.

When iPhone 7 was launched in September 2016, Morning Consult also conducted a similar survey, with 21% of respondents saying they were likely to buy it and 68% saying they were unlikely to buy it.

However, the survey found that this does not mean that Apple's iPhone sales will decline. The 2016 survey also showed a decrease in interest from the previous year, but it did not affect the continued growth of iPhone 7 sales. Apple sold 41 million iPhones in the third quarter of fiscal 2017, an increase of 2% over the same period last year.

Apple's iPhone X has received a lot of attention, in part because of the integration of a new feature called Face ID, which uses facial recognition to unlock the device. Some experts and consumers have expressed concerns about incorporating facial recognition technology into smartphones.

In the Morning Consult survey, 39% of respondents expressed a negative attitude towards facial recognition technology in their devices, compared with 34% of consumers who expressed interest and 26% who said they were unaware or had no opinion.

However, U.S. adult consumers do have concerns about the technology, with 56% either strongly or somewhat concerned that facial recognition technology in their devices could have a negative impact on privacy, and 50% saying the technology makes them nervous.
