Flurry: Apple accounted for 51.3% of devices activated during Christmas week

Many consumers spend the week leading up to Christmas and New Year learning new devices, and according to a recent Flurry survey, the majority of people are using Apple devices.

Looking at the week of Christmas, the mobile analytics firm found that Apple accounted for 51.3% of devices activated between December 19 and 25, 2014. Samsung came in second with less than 20% share (17.7%), followed by Nokia (5.8%), Sony (1.6%) and LG (1.4%).

Partly because of the iPhone 6 Plus' larger screen, Flurry found that phablets (smartphones with screens between 5.5 inches and 7 inches) far outnumbered other devices in activations.

During the Christmas week, phablets accounted for 13% of global device activations, up 225% year-over-year. Phablets took some of the tablet market share, with tablet activations down 35.3%, but had little impact on mobile phones. Despite the popularity of phablets, mid-sized phones still accounted for the largest share of activations, down only one percentage point.

Next year, tablet phones will also seize the market share of smart devices. The International Data Corporation (IDC) September 2014 index predicts that global tablet phone shipments will exceed tablets for the first time in 2015, with tablet phone and tablet shipments reaching 318.4 million and 254.7 million respectively. However, tablet phones will not surpass mid-sized smartphones in the short term, but IDC predicts that global tablet phone shipments will reach 600 million in 2018, which is still less than half of smartphone shipments (1.25 billion).
