The number of text messages in China has fallen every year since peaking in 2012, even as the number of mobile phone users in the country continues to grow.

According to data from China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), Chinese mobile phone users sent 900 billion text messages in 2012. The main reason is the rise of mobile messaging apps. Instant messaging apps are more popular in China than in other countries.

Due to China's huge population base, China has more instant messaging app users than any other country; India ranks second, but cannot be compared with China.

The penetration rate of instant messaging applications is also very high: in 2015, 2/3 of mobile Internet users downloaded and used instant messaging applications, which is equivalent to 2/5 of mobile phone users.
