comScore: Apple accounts for 40% of the U.S. smartphone market share in Q2 2013

On August 9, 2013, comScore, an American Internet traffic monitoring agency, released data on Thursday, saying that in the second quarter of this year, Apple became the largest smartphone OEM manufacturer in the United States with a 40% share, while Google Android became the largest smartphone platform with a 52% share.

According to comScore, approximately 142 million Americans owned smartphones in the second quarter of this year (a penetration rate of 59%), a 4% increase from the first quarter.

Apple became the largest smartphone OEM in the United States with a share of 39.9%, up 0.9 percentage points from the first quarter. The launch of the Galaxy S4 pushed Samsung's share up 2 percentage points to 23.7%. HTC ranked third with a share of 8.5%, followed by Motorola (7.2%) and LG (6.6%).

In terms of platforms, Android ranked first in the US market with a 52% share in the second quarter, the same as in the first quarter. Apple's share was 39.9%, up 0.9 percentage points from the first quarter. BlackBerry, Microsoft and Symbian ranked third to fifth, with shares of 4.4%, 3.1% and 0.3% respectively. Only Microsoft increased slightly by 0.1 percentage points, while BlackBerry and Symbian shrank by 0.8 and 0.2 percentage points respectively.
