WhatsApp official data: WhatsApp's daily message volume peaked at over 27 billion

On June 13, 2013, the mobile instant messaging application WhatsApp announced that the peak number of messages processed by the service per day had exceeded 27 billion.

WhatsApp revealed on its Twitter account that the 27 billion messages include 10 billion messages sent by users and 17 billion messages received. The two numbers are inconsistent because many users use the group messaging function.

The last peak in WhatsApp messaging was on December 31, 2012, when the number of messages reached 18 billion.

In April 2013, WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum revealed that the number of monthly active users of WhatsApp has exceeded 200 million, but did not disclose the number of registered users. WhatsApp is currently regarded as the market-leading mobile instant messaging application. In terms of active users, WhatsApp has surpassed Twitter in popularity.

WhatsApp's partners include mobile operators and mobile phone manufacturers in various countries. Nokia has also set up a WhatsApp shortcut key on the recently released Asha210 mobile phone.

Blackberry Messenger, launched by Blackberry, once the king of mobile instant messaging, currently has 60 million users and processes an average of about 10 billion messages per day.

Among WhatsApp's competitors, South Korea's KakaoTalk currently has 96 million users, who send an average of 5.2 billion messages a day. WeChat from China, Line from Japan, and Nimbuzz from India do not disclose the number of messages, but WeChat has 300 million users, while Line and Nimbuzz both have 150 million users. In terms of monthly active users, WeChat is second only to WhatsApp with 195 million users.

WhatsApp leads in terms of number of users, but its business model is limited to charging users $0.99 per month for unlimited messaging. KakaoTalk and Line have made a lot of money from games and virtual content. Video communication tools from the United States have introduced gaming platforms. Canada's Kik will soon launch a content platform for developers. There were rumors that WhatsApp would also introduce a similar model, but no relevant action has been taken so far.
