comScore: US mobile phone user data for May 2012

comScore recently released data on the U.S. mobile phone industry for the first three months of May 2012. The study surveyed 30,000 mobile phone users in the United States and found that Samsung is the largest mobile phone manufacturer in the United States, with a market share of 25.7%. Google's Android continues to increase its share of U.S. smartphones, accounting for 50.9%, while Apple has 31.9%.

OEM Market Share

In the three months ending in May 2012, 234 million Americans aged 13 and over used mobile phones. Mobile phone manufacturer Samsung ranked first with a market share of 25.7%, up 0.1 percentage points. Then came LG, with a mobile phone market share of 19.1%, and Apple continued to increase its share of the OEM market, at 15%, up 1.5 percentage points. Then came Motorola, with a share of 12%, and HTC with 6.1%

Smartphone Platform

Nearly 110 million people in the United States use smartphones, up 5 percentage points from February. Android platform has the highest share, 50.9%, up 0.8 percentage points. After the fifth anniversary of the release of the iPhone, Apple's market share in smartphones reached 31.9%, up 1.7 percentage points. RIM ranked third with a share of 11.4%, followed by Microsoft with a market share of 4% and Symbian with 1.1%.

Mobile content usage

In May, 74.8% of US mobile phone users used SMS services, and the usage rate of downloaded applications was 51.1%, an increase of 1.6 percentage points. The usage rate of browsers was 49.8%, an increase of 0.6 percentage points. Visiting social networks and blogs increased by 0.6 percentage points to 36.7%. The usage rate of games was 33.5%, and 27% of users listened to music on their phones.
