According to research firm IHS (formerly iSuppli), smartphones will account for 54.5% of the mobile phone market by 2015. They predict that global smartphone shipments will reach 1.03 billion in 2015, up from 478 million in 2011. Currently, smartphones account for 32.5% of the market. A huge share of the growth is clearly coming from the low-end market, which will help companies like Samsung (with its own Bada OS) become a significant player. IHS says that during the second quarter of 2011, Samsung's smartphone sales grew by 600%, thanks to low-end products sold in China and Latin American countries. IDC, another research firm, estimates that Samsung sold about 17 million smartphones in the second quarter of this year. This confirms our prediction made a year ago: the smartphone war will be between Apple and Samsung. Reprinted from: TechZipo |
