Do you see things distorted? Be careful your eyes are "warning"

If one day, the square doors and windows suddenly become distorted, the straight telephone poles seem to become a sexy S shape, the world seems to have turned into a funhouse mirror, and the originally horizontal and vertical things seem to be "snake-like", then it is not a science fiction movie, but there may be something wrong with your eyes.

The macula is an area of the retina where vision is sharp and plays a very important role in vision. Abnormal vision will only occur if there is a lesion in the macula.

▲Normal vision & abnormal vision caused by macular degeneration

01. What are the symptoms of macular degeneration?

1. Distorted vision: seeing things distorted and crooked.

2. Black shadow: There is a black shadow blocking your view.

3. Vision becomes dim: Whether you are looking near or far, you always feel that there is not enough light.

4. Changes in apparent size: Things appear to become larger or smaller.

02. What are the common types of macular degeneration?

1. Age-related macular degeneration

This is a common eye disease that is closely related to aging. Its onset is related to genetics, environmental factors, smoking, hypertension, diabetes, atherosclerosis and other factors.

2. Macular hole

It often occurs in the elderly, and the causes include trauma, inflammation, high myopia and many other factors.

3. Epiretinal membrane

An abnormal fibroproliferative membrane appears in front of the macula, causing decreased vision, blurred vision, larger or smaller words, or distorted objects.

4. Central serous chorioretinopathy

It is a common chorioretinal disease, which is more common in young adults aged 20-45, and more common in men. It is characterized by sudden onset of varying degrees of decreased vision or blurred vision, deformation and shrinkage of objects, and may be accompanied by a central shadow.

03. How should macular degeneration be treated?

Wu Jianhua, chief physician, associate professor, master's supervisor, deputy director of the Ophthalmology Branch of the Hubei Medical Association, deputy leader of the Fundus Disease Group of the Ophthalmology Branch of the Hubei Medical Association, director of the Department of Fundus Diseases, and dean of the Aier Eye Hospital Affiliated to Wuhan University (Aier Eye Hospital Group Hubei General Hospital), said: The treatment effect and plan of fundus disease need to be determined according to the course of the disease. Generally speaking, early detection and early treatment of macular degeneration is the key.

There are different types of macular degeneration, and the treatment methods are also different. For example, macular holes and epiretinal membranes can be treated through surgery, while the treatment methods for age-related macular degeneration vary according to the different types and severity of the disease. Timely treatment can play a better control and treatment role.

04. How to prevent macular degeneration?

1. Avoid looking directly at strong light sources

Try to avoid looking directly at strong light sources, including the sun, laser pens, and electric arc lights. Otherwise, the macula may be burned, leading to permanent vision loss or dark shadows in front of your eyes.

2. Keep chronic diseases under control

Control cardiovascular disease and diabetes, maintain a regular schedule, and go to the hospital promptly if any eye discomfort occurs.

3. Maintain a balanced diet and quit smoking and drinking

Whether it is for the eyes or the body, good living habits are always beneficial and have no harm. Studies have shown that the occurrence of age-related macular degeneration is related to sunlight exposure, smoking, drinking, cardiovascular disease, etc.

4. Wearing sunglasses can prevent age-related macular degeneration

Avoiding prolonged sun exposure and wearing properly fitted sunglasses may help reduce the risk of macular disease.

Of course, the distortion of vision may be caused by other fundus diseases besides macular degeneration. No matter what disease is the cause, do not take it lightly, because it is an obvious sign of eye abnormality and must be checked and treated as soon as possible.
