Dry eyes, dry?

Maybe you have dry eyes!

Han Honglin, director of the dry eye diagnosis and treatment clinic at Zhengzhou Aier Eye Hospital, said: Dry eye is an eye disease that usually manifests as dryness, foreign body sensation, pain, burning sensation, itchy eyes, blurred vision, red eyes, photophobia, and tearing. The symptoms of dry eyes can be mild or severe. The early symptom is foreign body sensation, and as the disease progresses, there will be a burning sensation. Dry eyes are the most obvious symptom, especially when you are outdoors in the wind or when you blink less due to concentration. The symptoms of dry eyes are extremely obvious when you wake up at night or in the early morning.

Do you suffer from dry eyes if you stare at the computer for a long time?
You can take the following small test to see: 1. Under normal circumstances, yawning will result in tear secretion, but patients with dry eyes do not have obvious tear secretion after yawning. After blinking hard, their eye sockets will only be slightly moistened.

2. When you wake up, your eyes may be dry or even swollen.

3. Afraid of wind, need to squint your eyes.

Why does dry eye occur?

Director Han Honglin said: The surface of our eyeballs is protected by a "thin film" formed by tears, which can help us lock in moisture, maintain moisture, and block invasion. The "hydrating" water layer is secreted by the lacrimal glands, while the lipid layer that has the function of "locking in moisture" is secreted by the meibomian glands. Studies have shown that more than 80% of dry eye patients are caused by meibomian gland dysfunction, insufficient lipid secretion, and decreased "locking in moisture" function.

For example, a pot is full of water, but during the boiling process, the water becomes less and less. At this time, you need to add water to prevent the pot from drying up. If you do not add water, this will lead to "insufficient tear production" type of dry eye syndrome. Of course, you add a layer of oil to the surface of the water in the pot, which can lock in the moisture and inhibit the rapid evaporation of moisture, but if you remove this layer of oil, the evaporation rate of moisture will increase greatly compared to before, which will lead to "excessive evaporation" type of dry eye syndrome.

Who is prone to dry eyes? 1. Focusing on computers, mobile phones, reading and writing for a long time, which leads to fewer blinks and excessive tear evaporation. 2. Sitting in an air-conditioned room for a long time, the air humidity decreases, and the tears evaporate too much. 3. Severe air pollution, such as smoke, dust, and sand, will affect the quality and quantity of tears. 4. Drug-induced dry eyes, long-term use of eye drops containing preservatives, which reduces the number of goblet cells, etc.; 5. Dry eyes caused by trauma, surgery, and diseases;

How to relieve and treat dry eyes?

1. Improve your daily environment and pay attention to your diet: You should appropriately reduce long-term eye use, take more rest, and wear soft contact lenses as little as possible. You can place a humidifier indoors to increase air humidity and avoid air conditioners and fans blowing directly onto your face. In terms of diet, you can increase your intake of fish and reduce your intake of carbohydrates.

2. Medical treatment: Many people feel that the ultimate solution to dry eyes is to take out eye drops and drop a drop, but this practice is wrong. First of all, eye drops should not be abused. As mentioned above, long-term use of eye drops containing preservatives can cause dry eyes. Secondly, too frequent use of eye drops will completely wash away the normal tear film, accelerate tear evaporation, and aggravate dry eye symptoms. Therefore, please follow the doctor's advice when choosing medication. At present, the most common and effective method is meibomian gland physiotherapy. It includes fumigation, hot compress, and massage, referred to as "eye SPA".

The oil in normal meibomian glands is clear and easy to discharge. It is distributed on the surface of the eye and locks in moisture. For people with meibomian gland dysfunction, the oil becomes very thick and difficult to melt. At this time, you can use hot compresses to warm the eyelids to make the oil flow again, and then use certain techniques and instruments to assist and press to restore the smooth flow of the meibomian glands.

Director Han Honglin reminds everyone: Dry eye disease needs to be taken seriously, detected and treated early to avoid meibomian gland atrophy, which will affect the treatment effect or develop to an irreversible severity.
