Let me tell you something: How does the "socket" recover after tooth extraction?

Did any of you suffer from wisdom tooth inflammation during the Chinese New Year?

Don't mention it~ Experienced friends all know

The pain of wisdom tooth inflammation is really unbearable

I finally made up my mind, but I was still afraid and resisted before the tooth was extracted.

After the tooth was extracted, I was worried that the wound would not heal and leave a big hole.

Don't worry, the "socket" after tooth extraction can heal

Understand its "healing principle" and pay attention to some matters

The rest is up to time.

The healing process is also the process of tooth tissue regeneration.

Let’s talk today about how to restore the “socket” after tooth extraction?

The recovery process of the "tooth socket" after tooth extraction:

1. 15 minutes after tooth extraction: blood clots

Within 15 minutes after tooth extraction, the blood in the tooth wound will quickly gather at the wound and coagulate into a blood clot. Similar to the reason why we usually bleed from other parts of our body, the blood clot coagulates and covers the alveolar socket just from the human body's instinct to protect the wound and form a protective film to prevent bacterial invasion and infection. In order to promote the formation of blood clots, dentists usually let patients bite a cotton ball for about 40 minutes.

2. After 24 hours: Tissue fibers "station" blood clots

After the blood clot is formed, tissue fibers begin to slowly "station" in the blood clot to form blood clot organization, which is to better protect the teeth and prevent bacterial infection. Therefore, you cannot rinse your mouth, smoke, or drink alcohol within 24 hours. At this time, the inside of the alveolar is still in a fragile stage. If you are a little careless, the blood clot will fall off and cause secondary bleeding of the alveolar.

3. After 3 to 5 days: Epithelial tissue gradually covers the tooth socket

After the blood clot becomes organic, it will gradually transform into granulation tissue over time. At the same time, the gingival epithelium will also begin to grow from the surrounding blood clot surface, gradually covering the entire wound surface. This process takes about 7 days. However, it normally takes a month for all of them to grow back.

4. After 7 days: Bone tissue begins to regenerate

The wound changes every day after tooth extraction. After the 7th day, new bone gradually forms in the alveolar socket. However, it takes 3 to 6 months for the new bone to be rebuilt and completed, at which time the wound is basically healed.

Please note that there are special circumstances in each stage that cannot be tolerated. You need to contact the attending physician in time and go to the hospital for a reexamination to avoid inflammation. Since everyone's dental condition and physical fitness are different, the timeline for each stage of the process is not fixed. Patients with good oral conditions will heal faster, while patients with poor dental conditions will also have slow recovery. It is important to follow each step after tooth extraction, and "careful maintenance" is the best.

So how can we provide “careful care” after tooth extraction?

After tooth extraction in our maxillofacial surgery department, we will give each patient a card titled "Precautions after tooth extraction" to inform the patient of the nine most important "careful care" matters:

1. After tooth extraction, bite the gauze ball in your mouth tightly and spit it out after 40 minutes.

2. Eat 2 hours after tooth extraction. Eat mainly liquid food, which should be thin, soft, warm and cool. Do not eat spicy food. Avoid chewing on the side where the tooth was extracted when eating.

3. Please do not rinse your mouth or brush your teeth within 24 hours after tooth extraction.

4. After tooth extraction, it is normal to have blood in your saliva. Please do not panic. You can swallow the saliva, but do not hold it in your mouth to soak the blood clots! Do not lick the wound with your tongue to avoid worsening infection.

5. After tooth extraction, please do not swim or do strenuous activities within one week.

6. After tooth extraction, the wound healing process changes from black to white scab.

7. If there is excessive bleeding after tooth extraction, you need to come to the hospital for treatment. If the wound is sutured during tooth extraction, come to the hospital to remove the stitches 5 to 8 days after the tooth extraction.

8. The local anesthetic effect will disappear after 3 to 5 hours. If you feel pain after the operation, you can take analgesics (tablets) and antibiotics (the specific dosage should be based on the doctor's advice). You can apply cold compresses intermittently on the day after the operation.

9. Except for wisdom teeth, impacted teeth and supernumerary teeth, restorative treatment is generally required 2 to 3 months after the affected teeth are extracted.

Finally, I would like to remind you that all dental diseases start small and grow into large ones. If you clean and care for them in time in daily life and see a dentist in time when you encounter problems, many tooth extraction situations can be avoided.
