Amblyopia refers to the condition in which the corrected visual acuity of one or both eyes is lower than the normal value for the corresponding age due to abnormal visual experience during the visual development period, or the visual acuity of both eyes differs by more than 2 lines, and there is no organic lesion in the eye examination.

What are the causes of amblyopia?

Form deprivation

Due to diseases such as ptosis, congenital cataracts, and corneal opacities, light cannot enter the eye to stimulate the development of the retinal macular function, and early visual development disorders cause amblyopia.

Strabismus

Strabismus can cause the visual information of the two eyes to be unable to merge. The visual center of the brain will actively suppress the visual information obtained by the strabismic eye. After long-term suppression, the strabismic eye will develop amblyopia.

Anisometropia

When the difference in the diopter of the two eyes reaches a certain level, the image on the retina of the eye with a larger refractive power will be blurred, which often leads to amblyopia.

Refractive error

High hyperopia and astigmatism of more than 200 degrees that are not corrected in time can also lead to abnormal visual development and form amblyopia.
The treatment of amblyopia is a long process, and the older the age, the worse the treatment effect, so early detection, early diagnosis and early treatment are necessary. Currently, the main treatments for amblyopia are: wearing refractive correction glasses, occlusion treatment, and visual training.

What are the precautions for amblyopia treatment?

Timely follow-up examination: The younger the child, the more sensitive the visual development is, and the more frequently the effect of amblyopia treatment should be observed.

Combined with occlusion treatment: If the patient's corrected visual acuity is significantly different between the two eyes or there is no improvement with glasses alone, occlusion treatment should be used at the same time, and the doctor's orders should be strictly followed.

Combined with visual training: Visual training is divided into in-hospital training and home training. Only by combining the two can better training effects be achieved. Amblyopia treatment should be followed up with visual training in a timely manner to improve the patient's vision as soon as possible and improve binocular vision function.
