As the weather gets colder and drier, the baby's naturally moist skin begins to become dry and flaky. Faced with the collective outbreak of dryness, itching and redness, winter skin care is urgently put on the agenda. Today, I will share with you some misunderstandings about baby skin care in winter ~ Come and see if you are doing it wrong! Misconception 1: Eczema is caused by being too “humid”. This is totally wrong! Babies get eczema because their skin is too dry. The barrier function of the baby's skin has not yet fully developed. In spring, autumn and winter, it is cold and dry, and moisture is easily lost. The face, elbows, popliteal fossa and other parts that are easily exposed are usually the "hardest hit areas" of eczema. When the baby's eczema is more serious, the first thing to do is to use standardized medication under the guidance of a doctor; the second thing is to do daily moisturizing to help the skin lock in moisture and repair the skin's barrier function. Myth 3: Heat rash only occurs in summer Wrong! Heat rash is more common in summer, but it can also occur in winter due to wearing too thick clothes. Prickly heat is easy to appear on the baby's head, face, nose, chest and back. Usually you can see small shiny blisters, which will turn red, and small pus spots will appear over time. Usually the red spots will disappear quickly as long as you keep them cool. Parents should pay attention to distinguish between prickly heat and eczema. Usually, eczema is a patch of small red rashes that feel rough to the touch and may be accompanied by peeling and scabbing. In winter, the indoor temperature should be kept at 20-25 degrees Celsius and the humidity should be kept at 45%-60%. Parents should avoid covering their children. Myth 3: Babies don’t need to take a bath frequently in winter. It is more appropriate for children to take a bath 2-3 times a week in winter. The baby's skin is delicate. If they don't take a bath for a long time, the secretions accumulated on the skin surface will become a breeding ground for bacteria. If they wash too frequently, it will accelerate the loss of protective oils on the baby's skin surface and make the skin drier. It is recommended to apply moisturizer to your child within 3 minutes after each bath to achieve a moisturizing effect. Myth 4: Baby’s skin does not touch dry, so no skin care products are needed. Baby’s skin feels relatively moist and tender, mainly because the stratum corneum is relatively thin. The stratum corneum of a newborn is only 1/3 of that of an adult, the skin barrier function is not fully developed, the sebum content is low, and the water retention capacity is poor. The delicate skin is more likely to lose water in the dry environment of autumn and winter. If moisturizing is not done properly, the skin barrier will be dehydrated and damaged for a long time, and the baby's face will easily become red, dry, and flaky. Misconception 5: Hormone ointments will make babies "dependent". When it comes to hormones, parents' first reaction is mostly: Will there be any side effects on the baby? Therefore, even if the doctor prescribes hormone ointment for the baby, parents will always try to apply less to the baby: either the concentration is not diluted enough, or the hormone is stopped immediately after a little improvement. Both of these practices are undoubtedly rubbing salt into the wound of the baby with eczema. First of all, the ingredients in the hormonal ointment for treating eczema are very safe and have little effect on the baby's body; secondly, the medication must be stopped after the baby's skin has fully recovered - the ulcers have healed and it feels completely smooth. Otherwise, eczema will recur and will not heal, which will only increase the dosage of hormones used. Source | Panda Medical |
