Is fig a sun-loving or shade-loving plant?

Fig (Ficus carica Linn.) is a flowering plant belonging to the genus Ficus in the Moraceae family. It mainly grows in some tropical and temperate areas and is a subtropical deciduous small tree. There are currently 800 known varieties of figs, most of which are evergreen varieties, and only those that grow in temperate areas are deciduous varieties. The fruit is bulbous with a small hole at the tail, and the pollen is spread by wasps. Also known as Ajir (translated from Persian: anjir in Youyang Zazu), figs can be processed into dried fruits, preserved fruits, jams, juices, fruit teas, fruit wines, beverages, canned foods, etc. in addition to fresh food and medicinal uses. Dried figs do not contain any chemical additives and have a strong and sweet taste. Fig juice and beverages have a unique fragrance, which can quench thirst and are suitable for both young and old. Figs are luxuriant and elegant, with good ornamental value. They are good ornamental trees for gardens and courtyards. They bear fruit in the same year they are planted, and are one of the best potted fruit trees. If we vigorously develop fig bonsai, the benefits will be very obvious, and it is one of the potted fruit trees with the highest profit margin. There is also a story about figs and Jesus in the Bible (New Testament) (four gospels).

When to take cuttings of figs

The climate varies from place to place. Cuttings should be taken when the buds just sprout in early spring, that is, when the daytime temperature is around 20 degrees. Select 1-3 year old strong branches from the mother plant that have not sprouted, have short internodes, and have branches 1-1.5 cm thick. Cut them into 30-50 cm long cuttings, dig trenches with a row spacing of 50 cm, and insert them obliquely into the soil two-thirds of the way, leaving the rest exposed outside the soil, fill and compact, and water to keep the soil moist. For cuttings in summer, semi-lignified green branches can be used for cuttings. Roots will take shape about 1 month after cuttings. They can be transplanted after 1 year of cultivation. Cuttings can also be stored in wet sand for 1 month, and then cut after callus tissue is formed.

Growth habits of figs

It likes warm and humid marine climate, light and fertilizer, is not cold-resistant, not waterlogged, but relatively drought-resistant. In the inland areas of North China, if the temperature is -12℃, the new shoots are prone to frost damage, and the above-ground parts may die at -20℃, so winter cold protection is extremely important.

Figs are resistant to barrenness and have strong adaptability to soil, especially salt tolerance, but they are best cultivated in fertile sandy loam.
