Why is the water in Jiuzhaigou blue?

The reason why the water in Jiuzhaigou is blue is mainly due to the Rayleigh scattering effect. The blue-green color of the lake water in Jiuzhaigou indicates that the scattering of medium and short wavelengths is greater than that of long wavelengths. The reason why this is particularly prominent in the lake water in Jiuzhaigou is because the plant density in Jiuzhaigou is high and the water circulation conditions are smooth, so the lake water is extremely clean and transparent.

Anyone who has been to Jiuzhaigou knows that the water there is different from that in many other places. It is a bright blue-green color. The reason for this phenomenon is mainly due to the scattering, reflection and absorption of sunlight by the lake water.

We all know that sunlight or natural light is a complex light composed of monochromatic lights of different wavelengths. In the spectrum, the wavelength gradually decreases from red light to purple light. The water in Jiuzhaigou is blue-green, which means that the scattering of medium and short wavelengths in the lake water is far greater than the scattering of long wavelengths. This phenomenon is also called the Rayleigh scattering effect.

The reason why Rayleigh scattering is particularly prominent in the water of Jiuzhaigou Lake is that the plant density in Jiuzhaigou is high and the water circulation conditions are relatively smooth. In addition, the travertine has a fixing effect on suspended matter, which makes the water extremely clean and transparent.

And precisely because of the high transparency of the lake water, the gray-white travertine and yellow-green algae at the bottom of the lake selectively absorb and reflect transmitted light, increasing the layers and changes in the color of the lake water. Therefore, the color of the lake water is varied and gorgeous.
