Recently, the American Heart Association, in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control, the National Institutes of Health and other government agencies, released the latest statistics on heart disease, stroke and other vascular diseases and risk factors. The report analyzes the current status of cardiovascular disease and its risk factors around the world. High systolic blood pressure and smoking were the first and second leading risk factors for life loss worldwide in 2019. Globally, smoking caused 8.7 million deaths worldwide in 2019. In 2019, ischemic heart disease ranked first among the leading causes of premature death and years of life lost (YLL) worldwide. Type 2 diabetes also rose from 28th to 14th among the leading causes of YLL worldwide. High blood sugar, high body mass index and smoking ranked as the top three risk factors for years of life lost due to disability (YLD) worldwide in 2019. Compared with 1990, the age-standardized YLD rates caused by hyperglycemia and high body mass index in 2019 increased by 44.1% and 60.2%, respectively. Environmental pollution has risen from the 17th to the 8th place in the risk factors for YLD worldwide, becoming the main risk factor for YLD worldwide. Compared with 1990, the age-standardized YLD rate due to environmental pollution in 2019 increased by 64.9%. In 2019, low back pain and migraine were the first and second leading causes of YLDs worldwide. From 1990 to 2019, type 2 diabetes rose from 10th to 6th place in the world, and the global age-standardized YLD rate increased by 50.2%. The prevalence of insufficient physical activity in the global population was reported at 27.5% in 2016. These rates have not changed substantially since 2001, when the prevalence of insufficient physical activity was 28.5%. In 2019, insufficient physical activity caused 831,502 deaths. Based on the latest report of GBD 2019 study, an estimated 7.9 million deaths and 188 million disability-adjusted life years were attributed to dietary risks in 2019. The main dietary risk factors were high sodium intake, low whole grain intake, and low legume intake. In 2019, approximately 18.6 million people died from cardiovascular diseases worldwide, an increase of 17.1% from 2010. The age-adjusted mortality rate from cardiovascular disease was 239.8 per 100,000 population, a decrease of 11.1% from 2010. The crude prevalence of cardiovascular disease in 2019 was 523.2 million, an increase of 26.6% from 2010. However, the age-adjusted prevalence was 6431.6/100,000, an increase of 0.6% from 2010. Cardiovascular diseases account for 37% of non-communicable disease deaths among people under 70 years of age. source: American Heart Association Council on Epidemiology and Prevention Statistics Committee and Stroke Statistics Subcommittee.
