Why can’t you take the cotton swab away after receiving the new coronavirus vaccine?

The Beijing Center for Disease Control and Prevention recently issued guidelines for preventing nucleic acid environmental pollution at COVID-19 vaccination sites. According to the guidelines, after the injection is completed, a dedicated person should be responsible for supervising the recipient to uniformly discard the cotton swab used to press the vaccination site in a designated recycling container and it must not be taken away from the site.

Why can't the cotton swab be taken away? There have been reports that nucleic acid was positive at vaccination sites. Does this pose a health risk?

Wang Guiqiang, director of the Department of Infectious Diseases at Peking University First Hospital, answered relevant questions. On January 30, Beijing citizens received the new coronavirus vaccine.

Vaccination operations should be standardized to avoid vaccine contamination of the environment

In the vaccination area, operations must be carried out in a standardized manner to avoid vaccine contamination of the surrounding environment and causing others to test positive for nucleic acid.

Cotton swabs may be contaminated with vaccine ingredients

Pressing the cotton swab with vaccine ingredients may also cause some contamination problems. The cotton swab needs to be discarded in the designated place in the vaccination area and cannot be taken away.

The virus on the cotton swab is inactivated and not contagious

There is no need to panic about environmental pollution in the vaccination area. The new coronavirus vaccine itself is an inactivated virus and can test positive for nucleic acid, but it is not contagious.

No environmental nucleic acid testing is required at the injection site

The new coronavirus vaccine is not contagious, so there is no need to conduct environmental nucleic acid testing at the injection site.

The public does not need to worry about vaccine residues on clothing

It is not a big problem if the cotton swab gets on clothes, and it will not cause transmission problems. The vaccine itself can be fine if it gets on anything.

Still need to take precautions after vaccination

During the vaccination process, everyone must continue to take good personal protection. After vaccination, you still need to take good protection.
