When should ptosis be treated? This has always troubled many parents. Some parents think it is better to do the surgery later, waiting until the child is 15 or 16 years old. However, they do not know that eye diseases will cause great psychological harm to children during their early growth period. Most older children with ptosis are shy, introverted, unsociable, and have poor academic performance. I did not have this level of understanding at the time. Some parents of children with congenital ptosis are eager to have surgery on their children as soon as they are born, but the risks of surgery are actually very high when the baby is too young, and it is easy for the disease to recur and require a second surgery. We do not want the baby to go through the pain of a second surgery. For us, we hope that babies with ptosis can choose the right time to undergo surgery according to their own situation, because in addition to the child's appearance, we are more concerned about the child's psychological development. Choosing the right time for ptosis surgery 1. For severe congenital ptosis, when the upper eyelid margin covers more than 2/3 of the pupil, surgery should be performed as early as possible to prevent amblyopia, at the latest within 6 months. Generally, the doctor decides the time of surgery based on the child's condition. 2. Mild to moderate ptosis does not affect the normal visual development of children. The timing of surgery can be chosen around 5 years old before school age. The best age for ptosis surgery is around 3 years old. Many hospitals in China with better surgical conditions have set the age for ptosis surgery for children at 3 years old. 3. Ptosis is accompanied by strabismus, and ptosis is accompanied by myopia and hyperopia beyond normal. Such children will develop severe amblyopia. For such children, surgical treatment is recommended at around 1 year old. The main purpose of treatment is to correct amblyopia immediately after ptosis. The operation should be performed as early as possible. 4. Parents should pay special attention to moderate to high hyperopia, astigmatism, and strabismus in their children's droopy eyes. Even if the droop in such children is not severe, these complications will make the droop worse and may also be accompanied by severe amblyopia. Such children should undergo surgery immediately. 5. Some parents' children do not have strabismus, amblyopia, or severe amblyopia. Surgery at around 3 years old is most in line with the physiological characteristics of the children's eyes and their psychological development characteristics. Kind tips Three elements of surgery for three-year-olds: 1. The surgeon is a doctor who has extensive experience in performing hundreds of pediatric ptosis surgeries. 2. Have a hospital with excellent general anesthesia surgery conditions as a guarantee. 3. Have a mother who takes good care of her baby’s eyes after surgery. If the above conditions are met, parents can choose to perform ptosis surgery on their baby when he is around three years old. |
