What does the increase in body temperature have to do with? Under what circumstances will the body temperature increase?

We all know that the novel coronavirus is a new virus that broke out at the end of last year. Its infection symptoms are very similar to those of colds and flu, and fever is one of the most significant symptoms. Many people will use their body temperature to check for infection. So under what circumstances will the body temperature rise? Let's take a closer look!

Under what circumstances will the body temperature rise

Weather, diet, and even menstruation, many factors can affect body temperature and cause it to exceed the normal range.

So if you measure a high body temperature, don't panic. Check if you have any of the following conditions:

1. When the temperature is high, the body temperature is high; when the temperature is low, the body temperature is low.

Your body temperature changes with the air temperature. In a hot environment (such as in a car with the heater on), your body temperature may rise slightly, and in a cold environment (such as outdoors in winter), your body temperature may drop slightly.

In these cases, there may be errors in the temperature measurement, and it will be more accurate to wait for a while in a normal temperature environment before measuring again.

2. Low body temperature in the morning and high body temperature in the afternoon

A person's body temperature also changes slightly throughout the day.

When you wake up in the morning, your body temperature is at its lowest point, and in the afternoon or late evening, your body temperature is at its highest point. The difference in the peak values between the two points is about 0.5℃.

3. High body temperature after exercise and meals

Body temperature may rise slightly after strenuous exercise, labor or meals, but the fluctuation range generally does not exceed 1°C.

4. Infants and young children have high body temperatures, while the elderly have low body temperatures

Infants and young children usually have higher body temperatures than older children and adults due to their high metabolic rates. The elderly often have lower body temperatures than young and middle-aged people due to their lower metabolic rates. Therefore, when the elderly have a serious infection, they may only experience a low-grade fever.

5. Women have high body temperature during ovulation and pregnancy

During ovulation, a woman's body temperature rises by about 0.6°C and remains at that temperature until menstruation occurs (therefore some people predict ovulation by monitoring body temperature).

In addition, changes in hormone levels during pregnancy can also cause body temperature to rise.

How to measure body temperature accurately

The correct way to measure body temperature is to first take out the thermometer, gently shake it twice, and swing the mercury needle inside to the starting position. Then put the mercury thermometer under the armpit, wait for five minutes, take out the thermometer, and measure the indicated value of the mercury needle. Although the method of measuring body temperature with mercury needle is simple, you should pay attention to the following details when measuring, otherwise the measurement result will be biased.

First of all, when measuring body temperature, you must not move around and must remain calm. When measuring body temperature, if you do not remain calm and keep moving around, the probe of the thermometer will easily deviate, so the measurement result will be inaccurate.

Secondly, you need to measure your body temperature multiple times. During the day, the body temperature of the human body is constantly fluctuating. The lowest temperature is between 2 am and 5 am, and the highest temperature is between 5 pm and 7 pm. The body temperature will be relatively low when you are still, and it will rise slightly after exercise, after meals, and after emotional fluctuations. If your body temperature measured during exercise is a little high, exceeding 37.3 degrees, don't panic, wait until you calm down for half an hour and then measure it again. The thermometer itself may have errors, and the body temperature is constantly fluctuating, so the results of multiple measurements will be more accurate.

What is a fever?

Generally speaking, according to the level of fever (based on oral measurement), it can be divided into:

Low fever: 37.3-38℃,

Moderate fever 38.1-39°C,

High fever 39.1-41℃,

Hyperthermia: above 41°C.

The normal human body temperature (measured orally) is 36.2-37.2℃. The human body temperature in the afternoon will be slightly higher than in the morning. The body temperature will also be slightly higher after eating and exercising, but not more than 1℃.

For the same person, the temperatures of the mouth, armpit and rectum are different, and the temperature of the rectum is higher.

Toddlers: Toddlers are more likely to have fever because their neurological development is not as complete as that of adults, and their body temperature fluctuates over a wider range.

Elderly people: Elderly people generally have lower body temperatures because their metabolism is relatively slow.

Your temperature may be slightly higher after eating or exercising. Wait at least 30 minutes after eating or exercising before measuring your temperature.

The temperature difference in the environment may also affect the body temperature. It is recommended to stay indoors for 15 minutes before measuring the body temperature.

Which part is the most accurate for handheld infrared thermometer to measure?

Feng Luzhao, a researcher at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said that the temperature is relatively low in winter and spring, and handheld infrared body temperature monitors must be calibrated before use. Especially when measuring people entering the room from the outdoors, or when using the measuring instrument outdoors, it is recommended to measure the skin covered by clothes or scarves, such as the wrist and neck, so that the number obtained can be more accurate.
