Can you drink buttermilk directly? What is the difference between buttermilk and skim milk?

Buttermilk is a type of milk processed from whole cream. It is thick and has a sour taste. Generally speaking, it tastes good, but it needs to be consumed with other drinks. Of course, you can drink it directly, but I don’t know if you like this taste. Next, let’s take a look at the difference between buttermilk and skim milk.

Can you drink buttermilk straight up?

Buttermilk can be drunk directly, but it tastes a bit sour. In the past, it was mostly consumed directly as a beverage, but now it is often used in baking dishes. Not only is it used as a flavoring for desserts, but because it contains lactic acid, buttermilk also provides acidic and alkaline components and produces an exothermic reaction with baking soda, a leavening agent, to produce CO2, making the baked product more fluffy and refreshing. It is often added to European pancakes and English muffins, and it can also be used when baking cakes!

What is the difference between buttermilk and skim milk?

The word "skim" in buttermilk does not mean skim, but the transliteration of buttermilk. It is a kind of skimmed fresh milk that has been cultured with bacteria or acidified, and has a thick texture. It has a sour taste. Traditionally made buttermilk is the remaining milk after making butter (i.e. butter), so it is called buttermilk. However, buttermilk does have a lower fat content than ordinary milk. Sour cream is a dairy product made by adding lactic acid bacteria culture or fermentation to cream. It has a thick texture and also has a sour taste. As can be seen from the raw materials and production process, the two are not the same thing.

Homemade Quick Buttermilk

In some recipes, you can also use homemade "thickened milk" instead of buttermilk, but the flavor will be different; it is not recommended for large dishes.

Lemon juice and milk can also make an easy buttermilk recipe.

Ingredients: 1 cup of whole milk, 1 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice

Method: Add lemon juice to milk and place in a cool place indoors for about 10 to 20 minutes to allow the milk to thicken and form small balls in the liquid. Stir again and it is done. The homemade instant product will be thinner and have particles. The amount is the same as buttermilk. It is important to note that the small balls do not need to be filtered out and can be added together.

How to Store Buttermilk

(1) Fresh milk should be placed immediately in a cool place, preferably in the refrigerator.

(2) Do not expose milk to sunlight or light. Sunlight and light will destroy several vitamins in milk and also cause it to lose its aroma.

(3) When placing milk in the refrigerator, keep the bottle cap closed to prevent other odors from entering the milk.

(4) Pour the milk into a cup, teapot or other container. If you do not finish drinking the milk, you should cover the lid and put it back in the refrigerator. Do not pour it back into the original bottle.

(5) Overcooling also has adverse effects on milk. When milk is frozen into ice, its quality will be damaged. Therefore, milk should not be frozen, and can be refrigerated.
