Why do some cars not have windshield wipers at the rear? Why do sedans not have windshield wipers at the rear?

The windshield wiper is a part that every car has, and it is mainly used to clean the windshield. If you look carefully, you will find that some cars have windshield wipers, but some do not. For example, sedans do not have them, but SUVs do. Why is this?

Why don't some cars have windshield wipers?

Generally, hatchbacks and SUVs have rear wipers, while sedans do not.

The main reason is that due to the structure of the vehicle, the air cannot drop quickly at the rear gear of a hatchback, and negative pressure will be formed at the glass. Because of the negative pressure, the raised dust will gather here. If there is water on the rear windshield, the dust will stick here. Therefore, the rear windshield of a hatchback is more vulnerable to dirty windshields than that of a sedan on rainy days or at night when visibility is poor.

Therefore, hatchbacks generally have wipers on their rear windshields. Some low-priced hatchback models remove wipers due to cost reasons. Such models pose safety risks and are not recommended for purchase.

Why don't cars have rear windshield wipers?

As mentioned above, cars without rear window wipers are usually sedans. A sedan is a car with three compartments: the engine, the passenger compartment, and the trunk. This is what we often call a sedan. Hatchbacks such as SUVs and MPVs do not have a trunk. This is an obvious difference between a hatchback and a sedan.

Why do hatchbacks have windshield wipers but sedans don’t?

In fact, the biggest reason is that hatchbacks lack a "butt" compared to sedans. Don't underestimate this butt, it is related to the air flow when the car is driving. When the car is driving, the air will also flow more because of the high speed.

The rear windshield of a sedan is in the middle of the upper rear part of the car, and the air flow of a sedan is better. The airflow pushed away by the front of the car will continue to go backwards through the roof and blow away the rain on the rear window.

The windshield of a hatchback is usually at the rear of the car. When driving, the front of the car squeezes the air and discharges it to both sides, which will cause the lowest air pressure at the rear of the car. Therefore, the air on both sides will flow to the rear window mixed with dust, rain, etc., so it is very necessary to install wipers.

Why does the wiper not spray water?

First, check the wiper water. If there is no water or not enough water, just add water. The wiper water device is usually in the engine compartment. Open the engine cover and you will see several white liquid storage devices. On the cover, there is an icon similar to the shape of the front windshield and some dotted lines, which is the wiper water storage device.

Secondly, if the wiper water is fine, check the wiper circuit. First check the wiper fuse, especially for vehicles that have been used for many years, the probability of the fuse burning is relatively high. The wiper fuse is generally located in the fuse box under the left side of the steering wheel in the cab or in the fuse box in the engine compartment, depending on the model. The fuse is generally 10A or 15A. If the fuse is burned, just replace it with a new one. If there is no new fuse, the temporary solution is to wrap some copper wire around it for temporary emergency use.

Finally, if the fuse is not blown, you should consider whether the wiper switch is broken or the wiper motor is broken. In this case, you usually need to find an auto electrician to diagnose it.
