How to detect if a puppy has parvovirus? Can a puppy with parvovirus be cured?

Parvovirus is common in dogs, especially puppies. Parvovirus can easily lead to death, so it is necessary to check and treat it in time. Generally, it can be judged from some daily symptoms.

How to detect if a puppy has parvovirus

To determine whether your dog has parvovirus, you need to take it to a local pet hospital or veterinary station and have its feces tested with a test kit.

After being infected with parvovirus, dogs will show depression, loss of appetite, and persistent vomiting and diarrhea. The feces will be tomato-colored, which will cause the dog to quickly become dehydrated and have an acid-base imbalance in the body. The earlier the treatment, the higher the chance of survival. Vaccines can effectively prevent parvovirus infection.

Can a puppy with parvovirus be cured?

Parvovirus and canine distemper are both terminal illnesses for dogs. Compared with canine distemper, the cure rate of parvovirus is relatively high, generally reaching 70% to 90%. It is necessary to save the dog's life efficiently.

Parvovirus is a highly contagious and fatal disease for dogs. The course of the disease is very short. Some severe cases may die within a week. Once the dog survives this course, there is hope for survival. Therefore, we must seize every minute and second, not delay treatment, and bring the dog back to life and death.

Clinically, symptomatic treatment is mainly combined with hyperimmune serum and monoclonal antibody treatment (monoclonal antibodies are more effective than hyperimmune serum for early stage cases, which are relatively mild). The cure rate of adult dogs is higher than that of puppies, and that of mixed breed dogs is higher than that of pedigree dogs (pedigree dogs are mostly the result of inbreeding and have low immunity). The prognosis of puppies is cautious.

There is a highly immune serum for canine parvovirus on the market, which can be tried.

How to diagnose parvovirus in a puppy

A preliminary diagnosis can be made based on the results of a blood test and the main symptoms of the disease. If the hematocrit in a blood test is increased and the white blood cell value is normal or low, it often indicates a viral disease. The smell and color of the dog's excrement can be used as a preliminary diagnosis.

In addition, test strips can be used for diagnosis. The method is: use a cotton swab to dip the sick dog's feces or vomit into a plastic tube filled with saline and mix well. Put 3-4 drops into the test strip reaction. If a red line appears after 5 minutes, it is positive.
