Why doesn't the Christmas cactus bloom? How can I make it bloom?

Christmas cactus is a common flower in life. Because it is easy to grow and has the effect of purifying the air, many people like to grow some at home. So why does Christmas cactus never bloom? How to make Christmas cactus bloom? The following editor will explain them one by one, hoping to help you.

Why is Christmas cactus not blooming?

1. Too long lighting time

Christmas cactus is a short-day plant. If the sunlight is more than 10 hours a day, it is difficult to form flower buds, so there are no flowers. In some families, they let it get enough sunlight during the day, and there is strong electric light indoors at night, which will also affect the bud formation and flowering of Christmas cactus.

2. The temperature is too low

In winter, the room temperature should be kept above 15 degrees to allow buds to form and flowers to bloom. If the temperature is lower than this, it is impossible to form buds and bloom.

3. Large temperature difference between day and night

During the bud formation period, if the temperature difference between day and night is too large, even the buds will fall off. Therefore, from October to mid-November, before entering the room, if there is a sudden change in temperature, you should take shelter indoors in time. Usually, you should bask in the sun outdoors during the day and stay indoors at night to prevent the temperature difference between day and night from being too large, which will affect the bud formation and flowering.

What to do if Christmas cactus doesn't bloom

1. Fertilization

In order for Christmas cactus to bloom, it is necessary to apply thin fertilizer frequently and supplement potassium dihydrogen phosphate appropriately during the flowering period. Maintaining sufficient nutrition can promote flowering and it can bloom again after flowering.

2. Lighting

Christmas cactus is a short-day plant, especially during the flowering period, the light exposure time must be controlled. In a room with lights on for a long time at night, put a black plastic bag over the Christmas cactus and control the light exposure time to 6-8 hours a day to avoid light and promote flowering.

3. Temperature

Christmas cactus flowers in winter, requiring warmth and sufficient light. The suitable temperature for Christmas cactus growth period is 18-23℃, and the flowering temperature is preferably 10-15℃. It is best to keep it around 15℃, and the minimum temperature should not be lower than 10℃.

4. Pruning

Before the flowering period (August to September every year), cut off the weak leaves at the tail end of the Christmas cactus leaves, leaving only 4 leaves. Too weak leaves cannot produce flowers, and leaves with enough flesh at the bottom can easily produce flowers and promote flower bud differentiation.

Is Christmas cactus afraid of cold?

The origin of Christmas cactus is the tropical region of South America, Brazil, which is the lung of the world. It likes warm and humid climate. It is relatively drought-resistant and the suitable temperature for its growth is 15-25 degrees.

When the temperature is below 15 degrees, it will basically stop growing, or enter a dormant period. In late autumn and early winter in my country, Christmas cactus should be moved indoors for cultivation, and the temperature can be kept at 15 degrees to bloom normally. The buds will fall off when the temperature is below 10 degrees, and frostbite will occur when the temperature is below 5 degrees. In order to prevent this phenomenon from occurring, put a plastic bag on it when the room temperature is not high, or place it on the windowsill or balcony to receive sunlight.
