What are the reasons for heavy menstrual flow?

Menorrhagia refers to a menstrual disorder in which the menstrual cycle is basically normal but the menstrual volume increases significantly. It is also known as "excessive menstrual flow". The cause of the disease is due to weak constitution, sinking of Qi in the middle, unbalanced diet and fatigue, and long-term illness that damages the spleen, causing spleen deficiency, weak Qi, and water loss and blood loss. The body is naturally yang-dominant, the seven emotions are excessive, the five desires turn into fire, and one eats a lot of spicy food. One is exposed to external wind, cold, and heat evils, and the heat is hidden, forcing the blood to flow. What are the reasons for heavy menstrual flow?

1. Caused by imbalance of neuroendocrine function

The main problem is that the function of the hypothalamic-pituitary-uterine-ovarian axis is unstable or defective, that is, menstrual disease.

2. Caused by blood disease

Increased menstrual periods may not be a problem with the male reproductive organs themselves, but may be a sign of a blood disease. Because menstruation, like other bleeding conditions in the body, is controlled by the body's own coagulation system. If there is an abnormality in the coagulation system, for example, hemophilia patients who are born with a lack of certain coagulation factors have difficulty clotting their blood, resulting in heavy menstrual flow and prolonged bleeding each time. And menorrhagia is sometimes the only symptom of female hemophilia patients! Other common blood diseases such as thrombocytopenic purpura, sepsis, aplastic anemia, etc., can also easily invade the coagulation system and increase menstrual flow.

When you are prone to various infections, often have fever (especially high fever), in addition to the habitual increase in menstruation, there are also skin bruises, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, etc. This abnormal bleeding is more likely to be a problem with the coagulation system-that is, blood disease.

3. Tumors

The most common sexual organ tumor among women of childbearing age is uterine fibroids.

The prevalence of uterine fibroids is very high, reaching 20% to 25%, but please don't be afraid, because 99.5% of them are healthy. The most common types of uterine fibroids that cause menorrhagia are myenteric fibroids and submucosal fibroids. Endometrial polyps are actually an inflammatory disease. In recent years, the incidence of cervical cancer has been increasing, and there is a trend of gradually younger age.

The first symptom of cervical cancer is bleeding after sexual intercourse. This phenomenon is particularly prominent before and after menstruation, and sometimes even causes heavy bleeding. If you have idiopathic increased menstrual periods, or other menstrual irregularities such as decreased menstrual cycles, prolonged menstrual periods, non-menstrual bleeding, or bleeding during sexual intercourse, you must consult a gynecologist immediately.

4. Caused by endometriosis

To put it simply, endometriosis means that tissue that should have grown in the inner layer of the endometrium appears in other parts of the body. This "disordered" uterine wall affects the normal functions of the reproductive organs and is often accompanied by various menstrual disorders - prolonged menstruation, menorrhagia, premenstrual spotting, secondary dysmenorrhea, etc.

When your menstrual flow gradually increases, and the menstrual cramps become more severe; if you automatically feel severe discomfort or even pain when having sex with your lover; if you find that your efforts to get pregnant at a young age have failed... be careful, you may have endometriosis.

5. Caused by pregnancy

Abnormal vaginal bleeding in mature women is sometimes related to pregnancy complications. When your period is usually very regular, it is inexplicably late for more than a week or ten days. After that, it flows continuously like a gate is opened, mixed with more blood clots or tissues than usual, and lasts longer than usual. Then, this is most likely a small-to-medium-sized miscarriage.

Similar events are more common after abortion (whether surgical or medical), especially medical abortion, which has a 5% to 10% chance of unsuccessful or incomplete abortion. In addition, if along with the increase in vaginal bleeding, there are also panic, dizziness, sweating, lower abdominal pain and even fainting, it may be a sign of ectopic pregnancy.
