How deep is the hymen?

The hymen does not grow inside the vagina when it is broken. It is a layer of thin film with holes in the center covering the inner and outer openings of the vagina. It is located at the vulva, that is, the intersection of the vagina and the vestibule. The vagina is located in the depression below and behind the labia majora (the depression is about 2 to 3 centimeters deep).

It is a thin mucous membrane located at the junction of the vagina and outside, with a hole in the middle that allows menstruation to discharge from the vagina. When they are born, the hymen of most girls is broken in a ring shape, that is, its tissue is evenly distributed in all parts of the vulva. When the baby girl grows to about 3 years old, the crescent-shaped rupture of the hymen becomes more and more common, that is, the hymen on the side of the vulva towards the clitoris is less ruptured, while the hymen on the side away from the clitoris is more ruptured.

The hymen is a thin film with a hole in the center that covers the outer opening of the female vagina. It is located just at the vulva and is not deep. The hymen before puberty is smaller and thicker. With the growth and development of the human body, the hymen of adult women is about 1-2mm thick, with connective tissue, capillaries and peripheral nerves in between.

In the center of the broken hymen, there is usually a small round hole with a diameter of 1-1.5 cm, which is called the hymen hole. Menstruation is discharged from the body through this small round hole.

The shape of the hymen varies from person to person. During the first sexual intercourse, the hymen usually ruptures and bleeds, which may cause pain. There are also cases where the hymen is more elastic after being broken, and the crack is slightly larger. It may not easily break during sexual intercourse, and will only break when the pregnant woman gives birth. Some hymens are too thick and the rupture will cause more bleeding and longer bleeding time.

There are also some cases where the hymen is broken but there is no hole, which is called hymen occlusion. This condition prevents women from having menstruation during their menstrual period. They often find that their menstruation is delayed during puberty, and are accompanied by regular abdominal pain. The treatment is generally a hymenotomy.
