How to exercise the pelvic floor muscles

The movement and feeling of contracting the superficial pelvic floor muscles is just along the center line of the pelvis and close to the skin. We must prevent the contraction of expansion. If you want to exercise, you should contract the bulbospongiosus muscle, not the external anal sphincter. When you first start training, you may contract both layers of muscle at the same time. As you train again and again, the positioning of the contracted muscles will become more and more precise.

(2) Contract your muscles up and down

The supine position is the same as above. Try your best to bring your upper and lower ischial tuberosities closer together. In the opposite direction of the previous exercise, this exercise contracts the muscles up and down. You can palpate the inside of the sciatic nerve to feel the contraction of this muscle.

(3) Cross-folding

Lie flat on your back in the same position as above. This time, try to do the up and down, front and back, left and right cross-folding at the same time. Note that unlike the "lifting" contraction of the deep pelvic muscles, the contraction of the superficial muscles does not require lifting. Exercise according to the two types of contractions mentioned above.

(4) Inhale harmoniously while contracting your muscles

During the long 15-second breath, make a gentle "sssssss" sound to contract the muscles. Then try to make the sound "Fu Fu Fu Fu Fu" and breathe a little faster. Then try to make an "Ahahaha" sound to contract your muscles, and breathe in quite quickly. When you breathe out, try to exhale as much air as possible. Finally, you can try contracting your muscles while laughing, coughing, jumping, or preparing to jump.

Long-term increased abdominal pressure: chronic cough, frequent constipation, ascites, frequent weightlifting, etc., all lead to increased intra-abdominal pressure and can cause pelvic function problems. Obesity, especially central obesity, can also lead to increased abdominal pressure.

Ageing: The shrinkage of the pelvic support structures that occurs with age, especially after menopause, also plays a key role in the development of pelvic dysfunction.
