What causes stomach pain during 5 months of pregnancy?

Many women experience abdominal pain during the fifth month of pregnancy. The occurrence of this phenomenon is bound to cause concern among pregnant women. Indeed, if abdominal pain occurs in the second trimester, pregnant women must pay attention to it in time, judge whether it is physiological abdominal pain or pathological abdominal pain, and go to the hospital for examination in time. Next, I will introduce to you some relevant knowledge about abdominal pain in mid-pregnancy!

1. What causes abdominal pain during mid-pregnancy?

Mid-pregnancy abdominal pain refers to the pain that occurs around 4 months of pregnancy, when the uterus enlarges and the round ligament of the uterus is stretched. Many expectant mothers will feel some abdominal pain. Pregnant women often experience lower abdominal pain in the early stages of pregnancy. If the pain is mild, it will be relieved after rest and is generally not a big problem. However, if the pain is intermittent, or there is continuous pain in the lower abdomen, like the pain before or during menstruation, and is accompanied by vaginal bleeding, it is likely a pathological phenomenon and you should go to the hospital for treatment in time.

Symptoms of abdominal pain during mid-pregnancy

Physiological abdominal pain:

1. At around 4 months of pregnancy, the uterus enlarges and the round ligament of the uterus is stretched, and many expectant mothers will feel some abdominal pain. This type of pain is mostly located on one or both sides of the uterus in the lower abdomen, and is referred pain, dull pain or lack thereof. The pain becomes more obvious when walking a long distance or changing body position.

2. Exerting too much force during sexual intercourse in the second trimester of pregnancy can also cause abdominal pain in pregnant women.

Pathological abdominal pain:

In the second half of pregnancy, the baby gradually grows and the pressure in the expectant mother's abdominal cavity also increases. If the expectant mother's esophageal hiatus (the hole through which the esophagus descends to connect to the stomach) widens, she may develop a "hiatal hernia" and suffer abdominal pain. At this time, abdominal pain is often accompanied by symptoms such as chest tightness, shortness of breath, chest pain, acid reflux, and hiccups. The incidence of hiatal hernia during pregnancy is approximately 30% to 50%, and the symptoms are sometimes more obvious in the late pregnancy.

Treatment of abdominal pain during mid-pregnancy

1. Resting in bed can relieve symptoms

When you feel lower back pain, a heavy feeling in the abdomen, or other abnormal symptoms, stop the activity in time, rest more, and observe carefully. If the symptoms cannot be relieved, seek medical attention in time; avoid excessive fatigue and strenuous activities. The first 3 months of pregnancy is the peak period for miscarriage, so sexual intercourse should be avoided as much as possible.

2. Advice for expectant mothers: Eat small and frequent meals, and avoid foods that are too sweet, too spicy, or too sticky. Do not lie flat on the bed or lie too low after meals, and try to bend over as little as possible to reduce acid reflux and keep bowel movements smooth. If you find symptoms of gastric reflux, try to raise your upper body about 20 degrees. If abdominal pain is accompanied by coffee-like or brown blood discharge from the vagina, you should seek medical attention promptly and receive pregnancy preservation treatment according to the doctor's instructions.
