Is prolactin over 900 considered high?

Is prolactin over 900 considered high?

Prolactin is a hormone secreted by the ovaries. The normal content of this hormone is about 500, and it will increase during menstruation and ovulation. Prolactin will reach its maximum value during lactation, mainly to promote the secretion of milk. However, prolactin reaching 900 is considered to be too high. High prolactin can cause menstrual disorders and premature ovarian failure, and women need to take timely medication for treatment.

This is already very high and is a sign of endocrine disorder. If prolactin is high, you can take medicine for 2-3 cycles and then check your recovery status. If the prolactin level is simply too high, there should not be any major problem. Whether the menstruation is irregular or whether lactation is evident, if the prolactin level returns to normal after the menstruation, there will be no major problem. If prolactin levels remain high, a head MRI is recommended. Some patients with pituitary adenomas have elevated prolactin levels, which indicates they have prolactin-type pituitary adenomas.

What to do if prolactin is high

1. Etiology treatment: that is, different treatment methods are adopted for different causes. If it is caused by drugs, the drugs should be stopped first. If it is caused by hypothyroidism, drug replacement therapy can be taken. If it is a pituitary tumor, it can be treated with drugs or surgery according to the size of the tumor.

2. Inhibitory therapy: Inhibit the secretion of prolactin. Inhibiting the synthesis and secretion of prolactin through drugs can control the growth of pituitary microadenomas and even significantly shrink the tumors. Common side effects of bromocriptine are nausea, headache, fatigue and constipation. Therefore, the medication should be used under the guidance of a doctor. Data show that prolactin can be significantly reduced after one week of medication, galactorrhea will stop and menstruation will resume after 2-4 weeks of medication, and ovulation and pregnancy can occur after 3-6 months of medication.

3. Combined treatment: Patients with hyperprolactinemia who want to have children can first use drug treatment. If ovulation still cannot be restored, ovulation-inducing drugs can be added.

The above is the health knowledge about prolactin. In fact, we need to look at the specific cause of the disease. Some are endocrine disorders, which only need to be adjusted. Other diseases can also cause it. Generally, it will recover with active treatment, and you can get pregnant after it returns to normal. Some even require surgery, and if the effect is not good, it needs to be combined with drug treatment.

Causes of high prolactin

There are many reasons why prolactin is high. High levels of prolactin in the blood are called hyperprolactinemia, also known as galactorrhea and amenorrhea syndrome.

One of the main causes of hyperprolactinemia is pituitary tumors, because tumors are composed of cells that secrete prolactin. When these cells are out of control, they will secrete prolactin without restraint. At the same time, factors such as compression of the pituitary stalk can also cause increased prolactin. Taking drugs such as progesterone, dexamethasone, cortisol, strenuous exercise, and trauma may cause increased prolactin secretion. Common symptoms include breast tenderness, galactorrhea, infrequent menstruation, and amenorrhea.

The effects of medications can also cause an increase in prolactin. Oral contraceptives can cause an increase in prolactin and a decrease in gonadotropin secretion from the pituitary gland. Long-term use of drugs such as reserpine, chlorpromazine, morphine, etc. will change the production, absorption and metabolism of dopamine, thereby inhibiting the release of prolactin inhibitory factor, resulting in excessive prolactin secretion.

In addition, diseases such as primary hypothyroidism, idiopathic amenorrhea and galactorrhea syndrome, primary hyperthyroidism, renal insufficiency, bronchial cancer, renal insufficiency, and malignant tumors in other parts of the body can also cause increased prolactin.
