Delayed menstruation, also known as "infrequent menstruation", "delayed menstruation", "overdue menstruation", etc., is a common type of menstrual disorder. The female menstrual cycle is generally 21 to 35 days, with an average of 28 days. About 7 days earlier or later is still within the normal range, and the length of the cycle varies from person to person. However, if menstruation does not occur after more than 7 days, it is considered delayed menstruation. Various factors that affect the female central nervous system-hypothalamus-pituitary-ovarian axis and uterus may lead to delayed menstruation. It can occur during an ovulatory or anovulatory menstrual cycle. If women of childbearing age find that their menstrual period is delayed by more than 10 days, pregnancy should be ruled out first.

1. Pregnancy

After the menstruation is delayed for 10 days, you can go to the hospital for a urine pregnancy test. If the result is positive, you are very likely pregnant. There are also other symptoms of pregnancy, such as chills, dizziness, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, etc.

2. Medication

Taking progestin-containing drugs, such as progesterone, emergency contraceptive pills, etc., can prolong the luteal phase and cause delayed menstruation. Newer generation gastrokinetic drugs may also cause delayed menstruation.

3. Caused by surgery

For example, uterine surgery may cause adhesions in the uterine cavity or cervix, which may prevent menstrual blood from being discharged, thereby delaying menstruation.

4. Endocrine disorders

Obesity, excessive dieting, irregular living habits, premature ovarian failure, polycystic ovary syndrome, etc. can all cause endocrine disorders in women and lead to delayed menstruation.

5. Chronic diseases

Chronic hepatitis, tuberculosis, tumors, hypothyroidism, severe anemia, vitamin E deficiency, etc. often cause delayed menstruation.

6. Mental factors

Psychological factors such as mental tension, stress, environmental changes, etc. can cause delayed menstruation.
