Do women need to take off their underwear for MRI?

Magnetic resonance imaging is needed when examining certain diseases clinically. There are many things to pay attention to when doing MRI examinations, such as avoiding the presence of metal in the body during the examination. Therefore, any clothes or headwear with metal on them need to be removed. Women also have many things to pay attention to when undergoing MRI. For example, do women need to take off their underwear when undergoing an MRI?

1. Magnetic resonance imaging has the advantages of being safe, radiation-free and accurate, but in order to ensure that the examination can be carried out safely and effectively, the cooperation of the patient is required. Due to the magnetic field effect of magnetic resonance imaging, the person being examined is required not to have any magnetic substances inside or outside the body, such as pacemakers, artificial valves, metal or magnetic substances implanted in the body, such as metal contraceptive rings, dentures, artificial eyes, etc. The person cannot wear underwear with metal substances for the examination, such as women's bras with metal rings, so if you are wearing such a bra, you need to take it off.

2. MRI examination mainly utilizes the effect of magnetic field. In this case, there is no need to take off underwear, but you need to remove all metal items on your body, such as belt buckles, gold necklaces, bracelets, etc., to avoid vibration during the MRI process and affect the examination results. At the same time, if you are doing an MRI of the chest, most underwear may have metal on it, so it generally needs to be taken off at this stage.

3. Do women need to take off their underwear when doing MRI? It depends on whether your bra contains any metal objects. If so, you need to take it off. For example, if a woman has an IUD, she needs to remove it in advance before the procedure, because MRI uses a very large magnetic field, and it would be very dangerous if there is any metal objects inside. Therefore, before doing an MRI, you need to check whether there are any metal objects in various parts of the body.
