Does ovulation start on the day of menstruation or after menstruation?

We often emphasize our ovulation period in normal times, but most women don’t know much about their ovulation period, and not many people know how to calculate their ovulation period. Some women calculate their ovulation period from the day of menstruation, while some women calculate it after the menstruation is over. The ovulation period calculated in this way often has errors and is inaccurate in most cases. So should the ovulation period be calculated from the day of menstruation or after menstruation?

Does ovulation start from the day of menstruation or after menstruation?

Generally, the ovulation period is calculated from the first day of the last menstrual period, not from the end of the menstrual period, because the menstrual period is different for each person.

Four common methods of calculating ovulation

Method 1: Menstrual cycle

This is a method we often talk about, which is to calculate according to the menstrual cycle. But a regular menstrual cycle is required. What is a regular menstrual cycle? First of all, the normal menstrual cycle is 28 days ± 7 days. The so-called ovulation period refers to the 14 days before the next menstrual period. This calculation is accurate. However, not every woman's menstrual cycle is regular, and even if it is regular, there will be fluctuations. So this calculation does not apply to women with irregular menstrual cycles.

Method 2: Measuring body temperature

Generally speaking, a woman's body temperature will drop slightly and then rise again around ovulation. As mentioned earlier, before ovulation, the estrogen level in a woman's body will surge, and the effect of estrogen will also cause the body temperature to rise, so it is necessary to measure the body temperature at the same time every day. If you find that your body temperature suddenly rises, then you are ovulating that day. However, it should be noted that there are many factors that affect body temperature, so in addition to measuring body temperature, other situations must also be recorded. This is the only way to accurately calculate the ovulation period.

Method 3: Ovulation test strips

Ovulation test strips can be said to be the simplest and most convenient way to know the ovulation period. The testing method of ovulation test strips is actually similar to that of early pregnancy test strips, but it does not require morning urine for testing. Take clean midstream urine in a urine cup and place the ovulation test strip in the urine cup. If the test strip shows 2 bars, it is positive and ovulation will occur in the next 24-48 hours.

Method 4: Ultrasound monitoring of ovulation

Women can use B-ultrasound examination to accurately see the size and development of follicles. Generally, you can go to the hospital for the first B-ultrasound examination around the 10th day of the menstrual period. The doctor will tell you the time of the next examination. When the size of the follicle develops to a diameter of 17 mm, it proves that ovulation is approaching. Although this method is the most direct, going to the hospital frequently is really troublesome and the cost is relatively high.
