Is prenatal paternity testing accurate?

Is prenatal paternity testing accurate?

In life, many women do not know who the child belongs to after they become pregnant, because they have had sexual relations with several men at the same time before pregnancy, so this situation is very likely to occur after pregnancy. Generally speaking, if this phenomenon occurs, it is usually possible to do a prenatal paternity test for the fetus, but some people are worried that the results of the prenatal paternity test are inaccurate. So is the prenatal paternity test accurate?

Is prenatal paternity testing accurate?

Prenatal paternity testing means that paternity testing can be done before the baby is born. The usual practice is to collect the pregnant woman's amniotic fluid, venous blood, or fetal chorionic villus. However, there are certain differences in the sample collection time of these three methods. In addition, fetal villus sampling may lead to fetal miscarriage, so modern technology has basically abandoned this practice.

Non-invasive prenatal paternity testing can determine who the biological father of the child is through venous blood testing as long as the pregnant woman reaches 7 weeks of pregnancy.

The principle is very simple. After the fetus has been pregnant for a period of time, the fetus's blood will flow into the pregnant mother's body along the umbilical cord. As long as some venous blood from the pregnant mother is collected and extracted through technology, the free DNA sample of the fetus can be accurately obtained. Combined with the DNA of the suspected father, the two are compared through technology. If the DNA of the two matches, it means that the two are biological father and son. If the DNA does not match, it means that the two are not biologically related.

Compared with technologies such as amniocentesis, this method does not cause any harm to the fetus and relieves the psychological pressure of pregnant women. In addition, its accuracy rate is as high as 99.999%. Its safety, speed and accuracy make it the most popular identification method for pregnant mothers.

Methods of fetal paternity testing:

Prenatal paternity testing can be divided into chorionic villus sampling prenatal paternity testing, maternal venous blood and amniocentesis prenatal paternity testing according to the different gestational period and samples. The accuracy of these three types of identification is consistent with that of identification after the child is born.

(1) After 7 weeks of pregnancy, paternity testing can be done through venous blood of pregnant women.

(2) Pregnant women can undergo chorionic villus sampling between the 11th and 14th weeks of pregnancy to extract chorionic villus for identification.

(3) After 16 weeks of pregnancy, pregnant women can use amniocentesis to extract amniotic fluid for identification.
