Normal woman's Adam's apple picture

When it comes to Adam's apple, most people think that it is a feature exclusive to men. Some female friends, especially teenage girls, are surprised and worried when they find that they have Adam's apple, and even develop a state of insecurity. Therefore, many people ask questions such as whether it is normal for girls to have Adam's apples and what should girls do if they have Adam's apples. We will explain these questions in detail for your reference.

Is it normal for girls to have Adam’s apple?

The Adam's apple is a cartilage protrusion in the human throat. Both men and women have it, and it is a very normal phenomenon. So why do women have Adam's apple? The actual reasons are as follows:

According to statistics, the pharyngeal bones of the fetus begin to grow and develop when the fetus is 2 months old, and they will grow every year until 5-6 years after birth. However, from the age of five or six to puberty, the growth and development of laryngeal cartilage basically stops. Therefore, whether boys or girls, their thyroid cartilage is the same size.

However, after entering puberty, due to changes in the body's endocrine system, women's secondary sexual characteristics appear due to increased estrogen levels secreted by the uterus and ovaries, and the thyroid cartilage will also grow to a certain extent, but the growth rate is relatively slow and uniform, so women's Adam's apple is generally not prominent. There are three possible reasons why women have Adam's apples:

First, insufficient endocrine function: the dominant estrogen in women's bodies is female hormone, which also contains a small amount of male hormone. But when the secretion of estrogen is insufficient, the androgen content increases relatively. It is also possible that some qualitative analysis of male characteristics such as a large Adam's apple, more hair, and a wider voice may appear.

Second, genetic factors: If the father's Adam's apple is very large, it may be passed on to the child.

Third, thinness: If you are too thin, you will look like just bones, and the Adam's apple in the throat will look particularly prominent. In addition, it is also possible that the thyroid cysts of adolescent girls will expand physiologically. This is due to excessive basal metabolism and relatively insufficient iodine supply, leading to physiological iodine deficiency. The thyroid cyst swells as a result, but because the swollen thyroid cyst is just below the Adam's apple, it is mistaken for a protruding Adam's apple.

From this we can see that the Adam's apple is not a physiological sign of men, nor is it unique to men. Men with less prominent Adam's apples should not lose confidence because of insecurity, and girls with more prominent Adam's apples should not think that they are "tomboyish". When it comes to gender, men and beauties are very complicated and not clearly defined.

In addition, it is also important to note that if a woman has a long Adam's apple, it is necessary to consider whether it is due to insufficient estrogen secretion caused by ovarian factors, and it is also necessary to check whether the thyroid gland is healthy. One of the most common reasons why women are mistakenly believed to have an Adam's apple is the enlargement of a thyroid cyst. The thyroid cyst is "H"-shaped, divided into two lateral lobes and a muscle wall connecting the lateral lobes. The two lateral lobes are located on the lower side of the larynx and the front sides of the bronchial neck, reaching the middle of the thyroid cartilage above, so they are the nearest neighbors of the thyroid cartilage. During puberty, some girls' thyroid cysts will slightly enlarge, making the back of the neck look rounder and often mistaken for the Adam's apple.
