What are the causes of excessive menstrual flow?

1. Uterine fibroids

Small uterine fibroids generally do not have obvious symptoms, but those with a diameter greater than 5 cm or those that are submucosal or cervical fibroids may cause excessive menstruation.

2. Endometritis or polyps

Abnormal local proliferation of the endometrium due to inflammation or other reasons may also cause spotty discharge and excessive menstrual flow.

3. Cervical hypertrophy

Cervical hypertrophy is a type of chronic cervicitis, which can manifest as excessive menstruation, purulent leucorrhea, dysmenorrhea, pain in the lower abdomen and lumbosacral region, or frequent urination, urgency, pain during urination, and bleeding during sexual intercourse.

4. Polycystic ovary syndrome

Polycystic ovary syndrome is a common complex endocrine and metabolic disorder in women of childbearing age. It can cause hormonal changes, leading to menstrual disorders and increased menstrual flow.

5. Dysfunctional uterine bleeding (dysfunctional uterine bleeding)

The most common cause of menorrhagia is functional uterine bleeding, which is excessive blood loss caused by dysfunction. Dysfunctional uterine bleeding can manifest as prolonged menstrual periods, heavy menstrual flow, frequent menstruation (i.e., the cycle is too short) or irregular bleeding between two menstrual cycles.
