13 days after delivery, lochia suddenly increased

After giving birth, every woman needs to discharge lochia in time. If the lochia continues to be discharged, it will affect the health of women. Generally speaking, after the lochia is discharged, the body usually recovers slowly. However, some women find that the lochia has not decreased after thirteen days after delivery, but has suddenly increased. In fact, this is an abnormal phenomenon. It is best to go to the hospital for medical treatment in time.

Why does the lochia increase suddenly 13 days after delivery?

If the amount of bleeding increases just after delivery, it may be caused by poor uterine contraction, birth canal laceration, placental retention and abnormal coagulation function. This situation is "postpartum hemorrhage" rather than lochia. This often happens in hospitals, and the situation can be averted with timely treatment from medical staff on site.

Another situation is that the amount of bleeding suddenly increases 2-3 weeks after delivery, or even heavy bleeding occurs. This may be due to poor uterine involution at the placental attachment site, residual placental membranes or decidua, or infection of the uterine incision.

Abnormal lochia is generally dark purple in color, such as uterine prolapse or flesh color, with a foul odor. It may be accompanied by fever, abdominal pain, uterine tenderness, and may last too long and recur repeatedly. The causes of this situation are generally due to cervical erosion, cervical polyps, or even cervical cancer. If the lochia duration is simply prolonged, exceeding the normal time, and the amount is small, without an increase in amount or change in color, and without odor, it is also considered abnormal. The causes of this situation may be poor uterine involution, poor maternal constitution, qi deficiency, and endocrine disorders.

How long does it normally take for lochia to clear up?

Many mothers are concerned about the normal amount of lochia and how long it will take to clean up. This issue is directly related to the method of delivery and the physical condition of the mother. Mothers who give birth naturally and those who give birth by caesarean section not only have different recovery times, but also the amount of lochia discharged will be different. Since mothers who have cesarean sections give birth directly through surgery, during the operation, some doctors will clean the mother's uterine cavity at the same time, and remove some blood clots, placenta, fetal membranes, etc. in the uterine cavity. Therefore, the lochia of some mothers who have cesarean sections will only last about 2 weeks.

Usually, within 3 to 4 days after delivery, the lochia flowing out of the vagina will be bright red. After a few days, it will slowly turn into brownish red or pink. After about 10 days, the lochia will turn into brownish yellow or milky yellow. For mothers who give birth naturally, on average, lochia will last until the third week after delivery. Some mothers will occasionally have a little bright red lochia after the 10th day after delivery, but if the flow is not much, it is actually not a big problem and there is no need to worry too much.

However, some mothers will drink Shenghua Tang after giving birth in order to allow the uterus to resume contraction as soon as possible. It is generally recommended to drink it one week after giving birth. But after drinking Shenghua Tang, the lochia will remain bright red for many days. This is normal. After a week, the color of the lochia will gradually turn brown.
