Modern moxibustion treatment methods basically follow the ancient ones. Some doctors have developed it into spreading moxibustion (which will be discussed in a special section); the scope of treatment has been expanded, for example, it is used to treat skin diseases such as tuberculosis and warts.

[Operation method] There are two types of moxibustion: moxibustion with separate garlic slices and moxibustion with garlic paste.

1. Moxibustion through garlic slices: Take fresh single-headed garlic, cut it into slices about 0.1 to 0.3 cm thick, and use a needle to pierce several holes in the middle of the garlic slices. Place the acupoint on the selected acupoint and apply moxibustion according to the above method, but there is no need to change the acupoints in the middle.

Salt moxibustion

Salt-separated moxibustion is also one of the commonly used methods of moxibustion in clinical practice. It was first recorded in "Emergency Prescriptions for the Elbow", which advocated filling the navel with salt and placing a large moxa cone on it for moxibustion to treat emergencies such as cholera. It is introduced in later medical books such as "Prescriptions for Emergencies Worth a Thousand Gold Pieces", "Welcome to Prescriptions for Emergencies" and "Effective Prescriptions for Doctors in the World" by Wei Yilin of the Yuan Dynasty. For example, in the 11th volume of Compendium of Materia Medica, “For patients with cholera, convulsions, dying and dyspnea, and with warm air in the abdomen, fill the stomach with salt.

"If a child does not urinate, place salt in the navel and apply moxa to it." Modern methods of moxibustion have been improved to a certain extent, such as adding spacers above or below the salt; the scope of treatment has also been expanded accordingly, and it has been used to treat a variety of abdominal diseases and other diseases.

[Operation method] Let the patient lie on his back and expose the navel. Take an appropriate amount of pure, dry, fine white salt, fry it until warm, and put it into the navel to make it level with the navel. For example, if the patient's umbilicus is not obviously sunken. You can prepare a wet dough circle around the navel in advance and then fill it with salt. If moxibustion is required, other medicines should be taken separately. Generally, it is advisable to add other medicines (ointments or powders) first, and then add salt. Then place the moxa cone on the patient and apply moxibustion until the patient feels slightly hot, then replace the moxa cone. To avoid burns caused by salt exploding in fire, you can put a thin slice of ginger on the salt before applying moxibustion. Generally, moxibustion is performed 3 to 9 times. However, for acute diseases, more moxibustion can be performed without limitation on the number of moxibustions.

Moxibustion with Aconite Cake

Grind aconite into powder, mix it with wine to make aconite cake with a diameter of about 3 cm and a thickness of about 0.8 cm. Poke several holes in the middle with a needle, place it on the acupoints or affected area to be moxibustioned, and then place moxa cones on it and apply moxibustion until the prescribed number of times are completed. It is often used to treat impotence, premature ejaculation or long-term ulcers caused by deficiency of fire in the life gate.
