Is it normal for pregnant women to be sleepy?

In the early stages of pregnancy, expectant mothers often feel sleepy and want to sleep. This is a normal physiological phenomenon, so don't worry too much. After pregnancy, a woman's body undergoes tremendous changes. The increase in hormone secretion in the body can cause expectant mothers to experience drowsiness. At the same time, physical changes will affect the psychology, so pregnant women often have irritability, anxiety and other uneasy emotions.

On the one hand, they expect their babies to be healthy and beautiful, but on the other hand, they worry about their babies’ health problems. They even worry that their bodies will be out of shape after giving birth. Such complicated emotions make expectant mothers feel tired and find it difficult to fall asleep.

How long does it take for you to become sleepy during pregnancy?

Due to different hormone levels in each individual's body, the situation of each expectant mother will also be different. Generally speaking, pregnant women will begin to experience this phenomenon 6 weeks after their menstruation ends and last until the third month of pregnancy, after which it will disappear naturally. However, for some pregnant women, drowsiness persists for a long time and does not disappear until the 16th to 18th week. If the expectant mother is excessively sleepy or continues to experience this symptom in the middle or late stages of pregnancy, she needs to go to the hospital for examination immediately.

Causes of sleepiness in pregnant women

1. Hormone changes in the body

After pregnancy, women's body hormones undergo significant changes, such as a significant increase in flavonoids, which in turn affects sleep.

2. Luteinizing hormone secretion

After pregnancy, the human body will secrete a luteinizing hormone, which has the effect of protecting the fetus and preventing miscarriage. At the same time, it can also have an anesthetic effect on pregnant women, making them always feel tired and want to sleep.

3. Weight gain

After pregnancy, the weight gain of the pregnant woman will increase the pressure in the uterus, which in turn will lead to an increase in the amount of blood output by the heart. Therefore, pregnant women often feel tired and want to sleep, but the quality of sleep is often not high, and they are easily awakened and suffer from insomnia.

4. The body's basal metabolism becomes faster

Compared with ordinary people, pregnant women have a faster basal metabolism, so their body consumes calories faster, which leads to insufficient blood sugar, which is also one of the causes of drowsiness.

5. Excessive anxiety and tension

After pregnancy, the mental state of pregnant women changes, and they will feel anxious and nervous from time to time, which will reduce the quality of sleep of pregnant women and is also an important cause of drowsiness.
