What is the cause of brown discharge when I am pregnant?

It's spring now, and the number of pregnant women is gradually increasing. There are always friends around me who are in the early stages of pregnancy and they tell me anxiously that they are bleeding a little in the early stages of pregnancy and the discharge is dark brown. Is it serious?

It is normal to have brown discharge in early pregnancy. Many mothers have had similar experiences, but they were fine in the end. Today let’s talk about the reasons for brown discharge during pregnancy, what conditions may exist, and what should be done?

Brown discharge during pregnancy is not necessarily a sign of miscarriage

Many pregnant women have experienced brown discharge in the early stages of pregnancy. When they go to the hospital, the doctor may calmly let them go home and rest, or prescribe some medicine to maintain the pregnancy. Brown discharge in early pregnancy does not necessarily mean miscarriage, it may also be caused by the following 5 reasons:

1. Implantation bleeding

It's a fact that one in four pregnant women experience light vaginal bleeding (also called intercourse) during the first week of pregnancy. Brown discharge at this time is generally considered normal.

However, if the bleeding increases or turns bright red, you need to tell your doctor immediately.

2. Infection

If a woman has an infection or inflammation such as cervical erosion, cervical cyst or vaginitis, it is also a common cause of brown discharge in early pregnancy.

If this type of pregnant mother has sexual intercourse in the early stages of pregnancy, this type of secretion will appear the next day; especially for pregnant women with cervical cysts, bleeding will occur and will continue.

Once this kind of situation occurs, the pregnant mother must first go to the obstetrics and gynecology department to check whether it is caused by abnormalities in the cervix.

3. Ectopic pregnancy

In addition to the above two reasons, you also need to be alert to ectopic pregnancy and go to the hospital for examination and elimination in time.

If a woman has vaginal bleeding about 40 days after her menstruation, accompanied by lower abdominal pain, dull pain, and distension, it is best to go to the hospital for a check-up. If the urine pregnancy test is positive, and the B-ultrasound uterine cavity does not show a gestational sac, but abnormal lumps will be seen in the bilateral fallopian tubes, the probability of ectopic pregnancy is very high.

In this case, you must go to the hospital for medical treatment and examination and treatment in time, otherwise the ectopic pregnancy will be very dangerous.

4. Threatened abortion

Brown discharge in early pregnancy may be a sign of threatened miscarriage.

The main symptom of threatened abortion is generally a small amount of bleeding in the vagina, similar to this brown discharge, accompanied by unbearable abdominal pain.

At this time, you should go to the hospital in time. If the examination finds that the embryo is developing normally, the bleeding can be stopped after tocolysis treatment, and you can get pregnant again.

Which brown discharge requires immediate hospital visit?

If the brown discharge is not implantation bleeding, it needs to be diagnosed immediately.

If accompanied by fainting, fever, abdominal pain, cramps and dizziness, you need to seek medical attention immediately as they may cause some serious symptoms.
