What to check at the six-month prenatal checkup

In ancient times, women generally did not undergo prenatal checkups when they were pregnant, which led to many women giving birth to fetuses with abnormal problems such as malformations, and also made women more prone to difficult labor. However, with the development of science and technology, prenatal examinations are also very advanced. Therefore, women generally need to go for regular prenatal examinations every month when they are pregnant to rule out abnormal conditions of the fetus in the womb. So what examinations should a woman who is six months pregnant do during her prenatal checkup?

We know that technology is becoming more and more advanced, so many pregnant mothers will go for regular prenatal check-ups. At this time, we need to understand what pregnant women are checking for during prenatal check-ups. Are the prenatal checkups the same every month? What do you need to know during a prenatal check-up? Let’s take a look at the following content with the editor!

What to check at the six-month prenatal checkup

Three-dimensional color ultrasound is suitable for checking the gross morphology and major organs of the fetus between 20 and 26 weeks of pregnancy, because the fetal organs after 20 weeks of pregnancy have already developed, and fetal malformations discovered after 28 weeks of pregnancy will be more troublesome to deal with. Problems can be discovered and dealt with early. What to do next is:

24-28 weeks of pregnancy:

1. Pay attention to blood pressure, whether weight gain is too fast, and whether there is edema. Measure uterine height, abdominal circumference, and listen to fetal heart rate using Doppler.

2. Recheck blood and urine routine tests, and do a 50g sugar screening (check blood sugar 1 hour after taking 50g glucose orally for 12 hours on an empty stomach. If the blood sugar level is ≥7.8mmol/L, it is abnormal in the sugar screening. If the blood sugar level is ≥11.2mmol/L, pregnant women are likely to have gestational diabetes. Those with abnormal blood sugar screening need to undergo an OGTT to further clarify the diagnosis.

What should be checked during the first prenatal check-up?

1. Measure weight and blood pressure: The doctor will know the mother’s weight before pregnancy as a reference for future weight gain during pregnancy. During the entire pregnancy, the ideal weight gain for pregnant mothers is 10 to 12.5 kg.

2. Routine blood test: The pregnant mother has a blood test, mainly to test the pregnant mother's blood type, hemoglobin, four virus tests, liver function, kidney function, syphilis, hepatitis B, AIDS, etc., to prevent abnormal conditions in the future.

3. Urinalysis: It mainly tests the pregnant mother's glucose and proteinuria values to determine whether the pregnant mother already has diabetes or poor glucose tolerance, metabolic diseases that secrete insulin, whether the kidney function is sound, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes and other diseases.

4. Liver and kidney function tests: Check for diseases such as hepatitis and nephritis. Perform hepatitis B (HBV) virology testing because the hepatitis virus can be directly transmitted to the fetus.

Although prenatal check-ups will cost a lot of money, they are an important basis for ensuring that we can give birth to healthy children. Many couples do not do regular prenatal check-ups in order to save money, which results in them not knowing that their children are deformed, thus wasting their physical strength and energy. In order to reduce these unnecessary things, the editor still recommends that everyone remember to do regular prenatal check-ups!
