The structure is also relatively simple, most of them are spherical, without cell walls, only a three-layer cell membrane, so it has greater variability. The genome of mycoplasma is mostly double-stranded DNA, which is scattered throughout the cell without forming a nuclear region or nucleoid. The cell contains DNA, RNA and a variety of proteins, including hundreds of enzymes. Mycoplasma can be inoculated and grown on special culture media, and this method can be used in conjunction with clinical diagnosis. The two main bacteria associated with urogenital tract infections are ureaplasma and mycoplasma hominis. About 20-30% of patients with non-gonococcal urethritis are caused by these two mycoplasmas, which are the second most common pathogens of non-gonococcal urethritis and cervicitis. The infection rate of Ureaplasma urealyticum and Mycoplasma hominis in the urogenital tract of adults is mainly related to sexual activity, that is, the number of sexual intercourses and the number of sexual partners, regardless of sex. According to statistics, the mycoplasma infection rate in women is higher, which means that mycoplasma is more likely to grow in the female reproductive tract than in the male reproductive tract. In addition, the infection rate of ureaplasma urealyticum is higher than that of Mycoplasma hominis.

The cell membrane contains sterols and is tougher than the membranes of other prokaryotes. Any substance that can act on cholesterol (such as amphotericin B, saponin, etc.) can cause damage to the mycoplasma membrane and cause the death of the mycoplasma.

The mycoplasma genome is a circular double-stranded DNA with a small molecular weight (only one-fifth of that of Escherichia coli) and very limited synthesis and metabolism.

One end of Mycoplasma pneumoniae has a special terminal structure that enables the mycoplasma to adhere to the surface of respiratory mucosal epithelial cells and is related to pathogenicity.
