Can I have sex after artificial insemination?

Artificial insemination is a method that can help many couples realize their dream of having a baby. In life, there are many reasons for infertility in many couples. When this happens, they will go to the hospital for some relevant examinations. The doctor will also recommend infertile couples to take treatment measures based on the examination results. Artificial insemination is one of the methods, and there are many things to pay attention to when implementing this method.

Can I have sex after artificial insemination?

It is best not to have sex after artificial insemination. The fertilized egg is unstable after implantation, and sex may lead to threatened abortion. Abortion is a common gynecological disease. If it is not handled properly or in time, it may leave behind inflammation of the reproductive organs, or endanger the health of the pregnant woman due to heavy bleeding, or even threaten her life. In addition, miscarriage can easily be confused with certain gynecological diseases. Termination of pregnancy before 20 weeks with a fetal weight of less than 500 grams is called miscarriage (World Health Organization, 1966). Miscarriage that occurs before 12 weeks of pregnancy is called early miscarriage. If it occurs after 12 weeks, it is called late miscarriage.

Things to note after artificial insemination are:

1. Avoid semen leakage afterwards: Artificial insemination will be completed within 2-3 minutes. If you leave the examination table immediately at this time, the semen that has been injected with great difficulty will flow out of the vagina. The woman should close her knees tightly, slightly raise her legs, and lie still in this position for more than ten minutes during artificial insemination. The most important thing to note is that the injected semen cannot flow out.

2. Avoid strenuous exercise: After artificial insemination, you can go home directly. You don’t have to lie in bed after returning home. You can do housework as usual. Be sure to avoid strenuous exercise such as running and jumping on that day. You can take a bath on the same day, but you are not allowed to bathe in a bathtub.

3. The environment is different from natural sexual intercourse: For healthy women who have had pregnancy experience in the past, it is generally believed that the success rate of fertilization is very high after injecting semen into the uterus on the day of ovulation. However, the actual success rate is only slightly over 40%.

4. First of all, infertile women who undergo artificial insemination need to undergo a detailed gynecological examination to check whether the internal and external genitalia are normal, whether the endometrial biopsy gland secretions are good, whether the bilateral fallopian tubes are unobstructed, etc. If all these are normal, they are eligible for artificial insemination. Then you need to estimate the day of ovulation to choose the best time for insemination. Commonly used methods for estimating the ovulation date include measuring basal body temperature, cervical mucus (usually appears 4-5 days before ovulation), or continuously measuring the peak level of urinary luteinizing hormone close to the ovulation day, or continuous vaginal ultrasound examinations.

2. Before the estimated ovulation period of the woman, the sperm donor or the husband masturbates to obtain semen, which needs to be tested. If the results show that the semen density and activity are normal, wait for the semen to liquefy and then use a syringe or catheter to inject the semen into the vagina, around the cervix and into the cervical canal. The woman should rest in bed for 2-3 hours to prevent semen from being discharged.

3. Each woman can undergo artificial insemination three times in a menstrual cycle, starting three days before ovulation. If calculated by hours, it means once 72 hours, 24 hours before ovulation, and 24 hours after ovulation. If conception fails in one menstrual cycle, several cycles can be performed in succession. If necessary, drugs can be used to induce ovulation and adjust the ovulation period to increase the pregnancy rate. The success or failure of artificial insemination is generally determined by 12 cycles.
