Can I take iron supplements during menstruation?

We all know that women will bleed a lot during menstruation. Some people have a lot of menstrual blood and may be iron deficient in their bodies. It is best to supplement iron during menstruation, because heavy bleeding at this time can lead to anemia. Supplementing iron can help blood regeneration. Supplementing while bleeding can also prevent the body's physical condition from deteriorating and causing some trouble.

Can I take iron supplements during menstruation?

When the human body lacks iron, it may cause iron deficiency anemia, and sometimes oral iron supplements are needed. There are many iron supplements available clinically, such as ferrous sulfate for patients with mild anemia, iron dextran for patients with severe anemia, and ammonium ferric citrate syrup for infants and young children with anemia. If you want to better play their role, you can choose to take them about half an hour after dinner.

Take after meals to reduce irritation. Iron supplements can irritate the gastrointestinal tract, and some people may experience symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea after taking them. At the same time, iron supplements are more easily absorbed under the action of gastric acid, so they should be taken 30 to 60 minutes after a meal when gastric acid secretion is most active. This not only prolongs the residence time of the iron supplement in the duodenum, but also reduces the irritation of the iron supplement to the gastric mucosa.

Take it at night for better effect. The physiological and pathological changes in the human body have circadian rhythmic fluctuations, such as blood pressure changes, glucocorticoid secretion, and nutrient absorption. The absorption of iron supplements also has an obvious diurnal pattern. Most people take iron supplements between 7 and 8 p.m., and the absorption rate can be doubled compared to taking them in the morning.

It is also important to note that you should not drink strong tea or coffee while taking iron supplements. Because tea and coffee contain a large amount of tannic acid, which can form insoluble precipitates with iron and hinder the absorption of iron. Milk and some alkaline foods may also affect the absorption of iron, so you should try not to take them at the same time, or eat less while taking iron supplements. You should also avoid taking iron supplements at the same time as tetracycline, neomycin, vitamin E, aspirin, compound danshen tablets, calcium carbonate and other drugs to avoid affecting the efficacy of the drugs. If you need to use them at the same time, it is best to leave 2 to 3 hours between them.
