What are the symptoms of cervicitis?

Although cervicitis is a relatively common gynecological disease, it is not a difficult disease to treat. As long as you actively cooperate with the doctor, cervicitis can be easily treated. Most women do not have any symptoms when they suffer from cervicitis. If there are symptoms, they are mainly increased vaginal discharge, purulent vaginal discharge, and itchy vulva. A small number of cervicitis patients will experience bleeding during sexual intercourse. Cervicitis must be treated in time, otherwise it will affect women's pregnancy.

What are the symptoms of cervicitis?

Most patients with cervicitis have no obvious symptoms. For those with symptoms, the main manifestation is increased vaginal discharge, which is mucopurulent. The irritation of vaginal discharge can cause itching and burning sensation of the vulva. In addition, symptoms such as intermenstrual bleeding and bleeding after sexual intercourse may occur. If combined with urinary tract infection, urinary urgency, frequent urination and pain may occur.

Gynecological examination revealed cervical congestion, edema, and mucosal eversion, with mucopurulent secretions attached to and even flowing out of the cervical canal. The cervical canal mucosa was brittle and easily induced bleeding.

If it is a Neisseria gonorrhoeae infection, due to the involvement of the paraurethral glands and Bartholin's glands, congestion and edema of the urethral and vaginal opening mucosa as well as a large amount of purulent secretions may be seen.

Diagnosis of cervicitis

If microscopic examination of vaginal discharge reveals an increase in leukocytosis and two diagnostic signs are present, a preliminary diagnosis of cervicitis can be made. After the diagnosis of cervicitis, further testing for Chlamydia and Neisseria gonorrhoeae is required.

1. Possess one or two characteristic signs:

① Purulent or mucopurulent secretions can be seen with the naked eye on the cervical canal or cervical canal cotton swab specimen;

② When wiping the cervical canal with a cotton swab, it is easy to induce cervical bleeding.

2. White blood cell test: White blood cells in cervical canal secretions or vaginal secretions can be detected. The latter needs to exclude vaginal inflammation that causes increased white blood cell count.

① Gram staining of the endocervical canal purulent secretions, neutrophils> 30/high power field;

② Wet mount examination of vaginal secretions showed white blood cells >10/high power field.

3. Pathogen detection: Testing for Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia, as well as the presence of bacterial vaginosis and Trichomonas vaginitis should be done.

The dangers of cervicitis

1. Induce gynecological inflammation: Because the squamous epithelium of the vaginal part of the cervical canal is continuous with the squamous phase of the vagina, vaginal inflammation can cause various gynecological inflammations, such as endometritis, pelvic inflammatory disease, etc.

2. Cause infertility: Inflammation causes a significant increase in cervical secretions, which become viscous and contain a large number of white blood cells. This will have an adverse effect on sperm motility, hinder sperm from entering the uterine cavity, and affect conception.

3. Carcinogenicity: Cervicitis is closely related to cervical cancer. Due to long-term stimulation of chronic inflammation, atypical hyperplasia occurs in the columnar epithelium of the cervical canal. If not treated in time, it is likely to lead to local cancer, such as cervical cancer.
